Andorra doesn’t have its own tourist visa. You enter through Spain or France, so the Schengen rules of those countries decide what you need. If you need a Schengen visa, ask for a two-entry or multiple-entry one, because you’ll leave Schengen to enter Andorra and then come back. Always carry a valid passport.
Safety Note Before You Plan
The US State Department rates Andorra Level 1, “Exercise Normal Precautions”, and the UK government’s travel advice for Andorra carries no warning against travel. Both tell visitors to check the advice for France or Spain too, since you’ll pass through one of them. Read the US advisory and the FCDO advice again close to your travel date.
Who Needs a Visa for Andorra?
The answer depends on your passport, and on the rules for entering France or Spain.
- EU citizens: a valid national ID card or passport is enough, according to the official Andorra tourism site.
- Visa-exempt travellers: citizens of countries such as the United States, the United Kingdom, Canada and Australia can enter Schengen countries without a visa for short stays, so they can reach Andorra with a passport.
- Travellers who need a Schengen visa: citizens of countries such as Pakistan, India, Nigeria, Egypt and China need a Schengen visa before they travel to Spain or France. For Andorra, that visa should allow more than one entry.
- Residents of Andorra: the UK government notes that you must still meet Schengen entry rules for France or Spain, even if you have Andorran residency.
These are examples, not a full list. Check your own nationality with the French or Spanish embassy, because the lists change.
How to Get a Schengen Visa for an Andorra Trip
The official Andorra tourism site tells non-EU visitors to ask the French or Spanish embassy or consulate in their country whether they need a Schengen visa. It also says to apply for a two-entry or multiple-entry visa, so you can leave and re-enter the Schengen Area without trouble.
- Decide whether you’ll enter through Spain or France.
- Check the official portal: France-Visas for France, or the Spanish foreign ministry for Spain.
- Book an appointment at the consulate or its visa centre, and bring your documents.
- Collect your passport and check that the visa dates and number of entries match your plan.
The Andorran Ministry of Foreign Affairs also publishes travel information on its official travel page. Visa fees and processing times change, so check them on the official portal rather than a third-party site.
Passport Rules
The UK government says travellers to Andorra must follow the Schengen passport requirements. In practice, that usually means your passport should be valid for at least three months after the day you leave the Schengen Area, and it shouldn’t be too old. Check the exact rule with your airline and the embassy before you book, because airlines can be stricter than the border.
What to Carry at the Border
- Your passport, plus your Schengen visa if you need one.
- Proof of onward travel and accommodation. The US State Department says tourists must carry both.
- Travel insurance. The US State Department strongly recommends it.
- Car papers, if you’re driving a rental or your own vehicle.
Many visitors expect to drive straight in. That’s often how it feels, but the official tourism site notes your papers can be checked by French or Spanish officers or by the Andorran police, so keep them handy.
EES and ETIAS: What Changed in 2026
The EU’s Entry/Exit System, or EES, has been fully running at the external borders of all 29 Schengen countries since 10 April 2026, according to the French government. It records entries and exits of non-EU visitors and replaces passport stamping. Andorran nationals are exempt, and Andorran guidance says non-EU visitors who travel through Andorra still follow EES rules when they re-enter Schengen.
ETIAS, the EU travel authorisation for visa-exempt visitors, isn’t running yet. In summer 2026 the EU removed its late-2026 target and has not given a new start date. If it launches, visa-exempt travellers going to Andorra through Spain or France would need to follow it. Check the official ETIAS page before booking far ahead.
How Long Can You Stay?
Schengen short stays are limited to 90 days in any 180-day period. Andorra itself isn’t in Schengen, but you enter and leave through Schengen countries. Ask the embassy how your plan fits the 90-day rule if you plan a long trip.
Don’t overstay. If you need to stay longer, contact the immigration authority of the country where you are before your allowed time ends. For the trip itself, see our flights to Andorra and getting around Andorra guides.
Children, Pets and Shopping
- Children: the US State Department points to Andorran guidance on unaccompanied minors. If a child travels alone or with one parent, ask the authorities which documents they need.
- Pets: dogs, cats and ferrets must meet set requirements, and the official tourism site lists the Department of Agriculture as the contact.
- Purchases: the tourism site links to a customs allowance document. Check it before you buy large amounts, since limits apply when you leave.
Decision Guide
- Choose a multiple-entry Schengen visa if you’ll fly into Barcelona or Toulouse, visit Andorra, then return to Spain or France.
- Choose no visa, just a passport if your nationality is visa-exempt for Schengen short stays.
- Choose to contact the embassy first if you hold a residence permit, a refugee travel document or a second nationality.
Common Mistakes
- Applying for a single-entry visa and then being unable to re-enter Spain or France after visiting Andorra.
- Relying on a blog or agent instead of the embassy’s own instructions.
- Forgetting that rules for Spain and France apply on the road in, even though Andorra has no visa of its own.
Quick Checklist
- Passport valid beyond your trip dates.
- Correct Schengen visa, if needed, with at least two entries.
- Hotel booking and onward ticket saved on your phone and printed.
- Travel insurance that covers skiing, if you plan to ski.
- Latest advisories checked.
Andorra Visa FAQs
Can I enter Andorra with only a Spanish or French visa?
A Schengen visa from either country can work, as long as it lets you enter more than once. Check the visa’s number of entries and dates before you travel.
Do I need a visa to enter Andorra if I’m visa-exempt for Schengen?
No separate visa is needed. You enter through Spain or France with the passport you’d normally use, and the border rules for that country apply.
Is there an Andorra e-visa?
Not from the Andorran government. Third-party sites that sell an Andorra e-visa aren’t official, so use the French or Spanish embassy channels instead.
Do UK citizens need anything special?
UK passport holders follow the Schengen rules for Spain or France on arrival. Read the FCDO advice for Andorra, plus the one for your entry country.
