Where to Stay in Andorra: Best Areas for Every Trip

Where to stay in Andorra by trip type: the capital, Escaldes-Engordany, ski bases like Soldeu and Pas de la Casa, and quieter villages.

For most first-time visitors, the best place to stay in Andorra is Andorra la Vella or neighbouring Escaldes-Engordany. They put shops, restaurants, the Caldea spa and bus links close by. Skiers should look at Canillo, Soldeu or Pas de la Casa, while quieter trips suit La Massana, Arinsal or Ordino.

Andorra la Vella

This is the capital and the easiest base without a car. Avinguda Meritxell is the main shopping street, and the old quarter, with Casa de la Vall, is close by. Buses to other parishes start here, and our getting around Andorra guide explains how they work. If you’re unsure where to stay, choose this area.

Escaldes-Engordany

This parish is next to the capital, and Caldea is about a 10-minute walk from the centre of Andorra la Vella. Carlemany Avenue continues the shopping street. Pick it if the spa is a major part of your plan. Some hotels offer Caldea packages, so compare those with booking spa tickets alone.

Canillo, Soldeu, El Tarter and Pas de la Casa

These towns sit in the Grandvalira ski area. Canillo also has the Romanesque church of Sant Joan de Caselles. Soldeu and El Tarter suit people who want to be close to the lifts. Pas de la Casa is the high-altitude border town, popular with skiers and shoppers, and it can feel crowded at weekends.

La Massana, Arinsal and Ordino

La Massana and Arinsal are the base for the Pal Arinsal ski area. Buses on line L5 run between the capital and Arinsal. Ordino and La Cortinada are quieter, with older stone buildings and easy access to Ordino Arcalís. Booking.com’s traveller data rates La Cortinada and Sant Julià de Lòria highly for tranquillity, mountains and nature.

Types of Stay

  • Hotels: available in every area, from city hotels to ski hotels near the lifts.
  • Apartments and apart-hotels: common in ski towns, and handy for families who want a kitchen.
  • Hostels and guesthouses: a good option for solo travellers on a lower budget.

Family Notes

Caldea has a children’s area called Likids for ages three to eight, and its adult-only Inúu has age limits, so check the details on Caldea’s official site. In ski towns, ask whether the hotel is close to the lifts, because carrying equipment with children can be tiring.

Food and Dietary Needs

We couldn’t confirm an official list of halal restaurants in Andorra. If you need halal food, ask the hotel and nearby restaurants before you book. Apartments with a kitchen can give you more control over meals. Traditional Andorran menus often include pork, so ask about ingredients.

Booking Tips

  • Book early for Christmas, New Year, Easter and February school holidays. The best time to visit guide shows how the seasons shape crowds.
  • Check the distance to the lifts, bus stop and parking, not only the address.
  • Check the final total. Andorra has charged a tourist tax on stays in tourist accommodation since July 2022. It is charged per person per night, varies by accommodation category, and children under 16 are exempt. Rates can change, so confirm the amount with your hotel and see the official tourism site and the Government of Andorra for current rules.
  • Read the cancellation terms. Snow and road conditions can change plans.
  • Ask whether there’s a ski shuttle, storage for equipment or a spa package.

Decision Guide

  • Choose Andorra la Vella if you want the most services and don’t plan to ski every day.
  • Choose Escaldes-Engordany if Caldea is your priority.
  • Choose Soldeu, Canillo or Pas de la Casa if you’ll be on the slopes early each morning.
  • Choose Arinsal or Ordino if you want quiet evenings and mountain access.

Common Mistakes

  • Booking a ski hotel for a summer trip and finding most services closed.
  • Staying far from a bus stop and then relying on public transport.
  • Not checking whether parking is included.

Where to Stay in Andorra FAQs

Where should I stay for the Caldea spa?

Escaldes-Engordany is the closest parish, and it’s a short walk from the capital. Other areas work too, but you’ll need a bus or car.

Are hotels cheaper outside the ski season?

Prices usually drop outside ski and school holidays, but they vary by hotel and dates. Compare a few options and read the cancellation terms.
