Choosing Where to Stay in Pakistan
Pakistan has everything from simple guesthouses to heritage hotels and international chains in the big cities. The best area depends on whether you want sightseeing, quiet or easy transport. In the mountains, location and season matter even more, because rooms fill up fast in the peak months.
Best Areas by City
- Islamabad: Sectors F-6, F-7 and E-7 are quiet, central and close to restaurants and cafes. They are a good base for the Faisal Mosque and the Margalla Hills.
- Lahore: Stay near the Walled City for sightseeing and atmosphere, or in Gulberg for a modern base with more restaurants and shopping.
- Karachi: Clifton and the Defence area are popular with visitors for restaurants, the seafront and a calmer feel than the older center. Traffic is heavy, so choose a location close to where you will spend your time.
- Hunza (Karimabad): Guesthouses and heritage hotels with mountain views. They fill up in the spring and autumn peak seasons, so book well ahead.
- Skardu: The lakes around Upper Kachura have lodges and resorts, with Skardu town closer to supplies and transport.
Types of Accommodation
- Guesthouses and budget hotels: Roughly 4,000 to 8,000 rupees a night. Simple, often friendly, and good value.
- Mid-range hotels: Often 12,000 to 25,000 rupees a night, with air-conditioning, a restaurant and better service.
- Luxury hotels: International chains and heritage properties in the big cities, usually the most reliable for power, water and service.
- Mountain lodges and resorts: Prices vary a lot by season. Rooms by lakes and viewpoints can cost more than their size suggests.
Prices change with the season and the exchange rate, so treat these as a guide and check current rates before you book.
What to Check Before You Book
- Backup power: Power cuts can happen, so choose a place with a reliable generator or backup power.
- Heating and hot water: Important in the mountains and in winter. Ask what is available.
- Foreign guests: Some small hotels are not licensed to host foreign guests. Ask before you book and check the listing, especially at budget places.
- Location: Check how far it is from the sights and the bus or train station, and how you will get there at night.
- Cancellation terms: Mountain weather and flight cancellations can change your plans, so a flexible booking is worth a small extra cost.
- Reviews and recent photos: Look at recent reviews rather than only the ones at the top.
When to Book
Book ahead for April and May and for September to November in the north, and for any trip around national holidays and Eid. In the big cities in the cooler months, book at least a few weeks ahead for the best choice. Outside the peak, you can often find a room on arrival, but it is safer to have your first night booked.
Booking Tips
- Compare a few providers and check the total price, including taxes and fees.
- Keep a printed copy of your booking with the hotel’s address in Urdu or English, which helps with drivers.
- Carry your passport and e-Visa for check-in. Hotels usually need to register foreign guests.
- Buy travel insurance and a local SIM or eSIM so you can reach your hotel and your embassy if needed.
