Five days is enough for southern Benin: base in Cotonou, then visit Ganvié, Ouidah and Porto-Novo, which are all within about 90 minutes of each other. Add Abomey and Grand-Popo for seven to ten days. Most routes use shared taxis, taxi apps or a hired driver, and the north is not included because of travel advisories.

Travel times to plan around

RouteTypical timeNote
Cotonou to OuidahAbout 1 hourRoughly 40 km by road
Cotonou to GanviéAbout 1 hour to the pier, then a boatBoat departs from Abomey-Calavi
Cotonou to Porto-Novo50 minutes to 2 hoursAbout 38 km, slower in traffic
Cotonou to Abomey2.5 to 3 hoursRoads can be slow in the wet season
Cotonou to Grand-PopoAbout 1.5 hoursQuiet beach town
Abomey to Porto-NovoAbout 3.5 hoursAbout 131 km, according to Lonely Planet

Cotonou traffic is heavy, with many motorcycles, and rush hour can add a lot of time. Some roads, including those around Lake Nokoué, are dusty and have potholes.

3-day Benin itinerary

Day 1: Cotonou

Spend the day in the city: the Dantokpa market in the morning, the cathedral and central mosque, then Fidjrossè beach at sunset.

Day 2: Ouidah

Travel about an hour west by road. Visit the history museum and the Python Temple, walk or ride the Route des Esclaves to the Door of No Return, and head back before dark.

Day 3: Ganvié

Go to the Abomey-Calavi pier in the morning for a boat tour of Ganvié, which takes half a day including travel. Keep the afternoon free for your onward flight.

5-day Benin itinerary

  • Days 1 and 2: Cotonou and Ganvié.
  • Days 3 and 4: Move to Ouidah and stay two nights. This gives time for the history sites and a slow evening on the coast. If your dates fall in early January, Vodun Days events fill the town (2 to 9 January 2027).
  • Day 5: Leave early for Porto-Novo, the official capital, and see its museums, the Great Mosque and the botanical garden. Allow five to six hours.

7-day Benin itinerary: add Grand-Popo and Abomey

  • Day 6: Grand-Popo, about 1.5 hours from Cotonou, for a quiet beach day and an overnight stay.
  • Day 7: Drive inland to Abomey for the Royal Palaces. If you want a calm visit, stay overnight in Abomey or nearby Bohicon, and head back to Cotonou the next day.

10-day Benin itinerary: slow it down

  • Day 8: Lake Ahémé, for a quieter lakeside stay near Ouidah.
  • Day 9: A spare day for Porto-Novo or a second look at Ouidah, depending on the weather.
  • Day 10: Buffer day in Cotonou, with the market and a final meal before your flight.

Some tour pages offer northern extensions to Pendjari and Natitingou. We do not include them because the US and UK governments advise against travel to those areas.

How to move between the stops

Every route above can be done by road. The getting around Benin guide compares taxi apps, shared taxis, coaches, hired drivers and self-drive, and it explains the helmet rule for motorbike taxis. For your first arrival with luggage, use the airport pickup options in the flights to Benin guide.

Tips that save time

  • Group stops by direction: west for Ouidah and Grand-Popo, north for Ganvié and Abomey, east for Porto-Novo.
  • Start early to avoid heat and traffic.
  • Read the Benin visa guide for tourists before booking dates, because the eVisa needs at least 7 days.
  • Check the best time to visit Benin for rain and holiday dates.

Which plan suits you?

  • Choose the 3-day plan if you only have a long weekend and want the three most visited stops: Cotonou, Ouidah and Ganvié.
  • Choose the 5-day plan if you want a slower pace and a night in Ouidah, with Porto-Novo as a separate day.
  • Choose the 7-day plan if Abomey and the Royal Palaces are the main reason for your trip.
  • Choose the 10-day plan if you want quiet days on the coast and lakes, with spare time for rain delays.

Seasonal changes to plan for

The main rains fall from April to mid-July, and a shorter rainy period follows from September to October. Dirt roads near the lakes and the road to Abomey can slow down in the wet months, so keep a buffer day. In the dry season from November to February, the days are easier for walking, but Harmattan haze can reduce visibility for photos. Public holidays and festival weeks change the pace of towns such as Ouidah, so check dates before you fix a route.

Common mistakes

  • Booking one night in Ouidah and then spending half of it in transit.
  • Planning the Abomey day trip after a late flight arrival.
  • Ignoring wet-season delays on dirt roads.

FAQs

Can I do Benin in a week?

Yes, if you stay in the south. A week fits Cotonou, Ganvié, Ouidah, Porto-Novo, Grand-Popo and one night near Abomey without rushing, if you plan your travel days.

Do I need to hire a driver?

Not for the coast, because shared taxis and taxi apps work. A driver for one day helps for Abomey or a long route with several stops.

How early should I leave for shared taxis?

Go in the morning. Shared taxis leave when full, so departure times are approximate, and early starts help you avoid heat and the afternoon rush.
