The best time to visit Benin is the dry season from November to February, when rain is rare and the Vodun Days festival fills Ouidah in early January (2 to 9 January 2027). Harmattan dust can cause haze, and the main rains run from about April to mid-July. Check travel advisories for the north whatever the season.

Benin weather by season

Southern Benin has a hot, humid tropical climate. In Cotonou, daytime highs run from around 28 °C in July and August to about 34 °C in February and March, according to Tripbase’s climate table. The dry season runs roughly from November to February. Most sources place the main wet season from April to mid-July, and some describe a shorter wet spell later in the year. A brief drier, cooler window in August is often mentioned for the south.

The Harmattan is a dry, dusty wind from the Sahara. It brings haze from about December to February and lowers humidity.

Weather by region

The south is humid, and rainfall varies along the coast. According to Encyclopedia.com, Grand-Popo gets about 82 cm of rain a year, compared with about 127 cm in Porto-Novo and Cotonou, which makes the south-west a little drier. The north is hotter and drier, with temperatures that can climb to 40 °C in March and April, according to one tour operator guide, but travel there is advised against.

Heavy rain slows road journeys, so add spare time in the wet season. The getting around Benin guide lists typical road times between the main towns.

Festivals and holidays

  • Vodun Days: Ouidah hosts the festival from 2 to 9 January 2027, according to the Beninese government. Under a 2024 law, the national holiday for traditional religions falls on the second Friday of January, so 8 January 2027 is the central day, and 7 January is also a public holiday. Book accommodation well ahead.
  • Independence Day: 1 August, marking independence from France in 1960.
  • Other public holidays: 1 January, Easter Monday, 1 May, Ascension, Whit Monday, 15 August, 1 November and 25 December.

Ramadan and Islamic holidays

Roughly a quarter of Beninese people are Muslim, according to the 2013 figures in the CIA World Factbook. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, depending on moon sighting. Eid al-Fitr, Tabaski and Maouloud are public holidays, and their dates shift each year and are confirmed locally. Offices and some shops may close on those days, so plan transport and meals ahead.

Best months by trip type

  • Choose January if you want Vodun Days (2 to 9 January 2027), and book early.
  • Choose November to February for the most comfortable weather and easier roads.
  • Choose March to May for quieter beaches, accepting more rain, as Lonely Planet suggests for Grand-Popo.
  • Choose May to August for the lowest prices, with heavier rain and some flooded secondary roads.

Once you have chosen a month, apply early using the Benin visa guide for tourists and match your days to one of the Benin itineraries.

What to pack

  • Light cotton clothing, a hat and sun protection
  • A light rain jacket for April to July
  • Comfortable closed shoes for markets and uneven streets
  • Modest clothing for temples, mosques and churches
  • Insect repellent. Ask a travel health clinic about malaria prevention and routine vaccines, and note that the Ministry of Health recommends yellow fever vaccination.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming the north is easier to visit in the dry season. The advisories apply all year.
  • Arriving for Vodun Days without a booked room in Ouidah.
  • Planning long road days in the wet season without extra time.
  • Expecting Eid and other holiday dates to be fixed far in advance.

FAQs

What is the Harmattan?

It is a dry, dusty wind from the Sahara that blows over West Africa in the dry season. It brings haze and lower humidity, mostly from December to February, and can make photos look hazier.

Is the rainy season a bad time to visit?

Not always, but it is harder. Rain can flood secondary roads, and journeys take longer. You get lower prices and fewer visitors, and the south-west is drier than Cotonou and Porto-Novo.

How crowded is Vodun Days in Ouidah?

Very busy. The 2027 programme runs from 2 to 9 January, with public holidays on 7 and 8 January, according to the Beninese government. Rooms fill early, so book well ahead and plan how you will return to Cotonou after the main ceremonies.
