The best area to stay in Benin depends on your trip. Choose Haie Vive in Cotonou for restaurants and services, Fidjrossè for the beach near the airport, Ouidah for history, Grand-Popo for a quiet coast, and Porto-Novo or Abomey if you want a calmer, culture-focused stay. Most visitors use Cotonou as a base.

Best area by trip type

  • First-time visitors: Haie Vive, for easy dining and a central location.
  • Families: Haie Vive or Fidjrossè, which a hotel booking site describes as quiet with green spaces.
  • History travellers: Ouidah, so you can walk the route early or late and avoid the midday heat.
  • Beach seekers: Fidjrossè for convenience, or Grand-Popo for quiet.
  • Budget travellers: Fidjrossè and Les Cocotiers are described as lower-cost areas, and simple guesthouses are common.

Types of places to stay

  • International hotels: chains such as Ibis, Novotel, Sofitel and Golden Tulip are in Cotonou, mainly around Haie Vive.
  • Guesthouses and simple hotels: a lower-cost choice across the south. Check whether the room has air conditioning or a fan, and whether bathrooms are private.
  • Serviced apartments: useful for longer stays, especially in Haie Vive, which is close to supermarkets.
  • Lodges and eco-lodges: found near Lake Ahémé and on the coast around Ouidah and Grand-Popo.

Halal-friendly and family notes

We could not confirm which properties label their food as halal, so ask before you book. A serviced apartment near a supermarket gives you control over meals. Cotonou has a central mosque, and about a quarter of Beninese people are Muslim, according to the 2013 figures in the CIA World Factbook. For families, ask about family rooms, cots and pool safety, and choose quieter districts such as Haie Vive or Fidjrossè.

Booking tips

  • Book early for Vodun Days in Ouidah, which run from 2 to 9 January 2027, with public holidays on 7 and 8 January. Rooms in the town fill well before the festival, so reserve as early as you can.
  • Confirm whether the room has air conditioning and whether the property has backup power.
  • Ask for an airport pickup, especially if you land at night.
  • We do not quote an accommodation tax, because we could not confirm an official figure. Check the final price, taxes and service charges on the booking page.
  • Do not book stays in the northern border areas. They are under travel advisories.
  • Read the cancellation terms before you pay.

How many nights in each place?

Two to three nights in Cotonou cover the city, the market and a Ganvié boat trip. One or two nights in Ouidah give you the history sites without a rushed day return. Grand-Popo works as one night after the cities, and Abomey is best as an overnight stop if you want to see the Royal Palaces without a long drive back. The Benin itineraries guide shows how these stays fit into 3 to 10 days, and the best places to visit in Benin explains what each stop offers.

Choose your base

  • Choose Haie Vive if you want services and a central, calmer area.
  • Choose Fidjrossè if you want a beach and a short airport transfer.
  • Choose Ouidah if history is the main reason for your trip.
  • Choose Grand-Popo if you want a slower stop after the cities.

Common mistakes

  • Booking downtown Cotonou for a quiet trip, then finding the traffic and noise constant.
  • Staying outside Cotonou without planning transport back for the next day.
  • Leaving Ouidah rooms until the week of Vodun Days.

FAQs

Is it better to stay in Cotonou or Ouidah?

Cotonou has more choice and suits a first visit. Ouidah suits history travellers and is about an hour away. Many visitors split their stay, with a night or two in Ouidah.

Where should I stay for Ganvié?

Abomey-Calavi, near the boat pier, is the practical side of the city. You can also visit from Cotonou in a half day.

Can I stay in northern Benin?

We do not recommend it. The US and UK governments advise against travel to the border regions and parks in the north, and some areas are covered by do not travel advice.
