Do You Need a Visa for Belize?

Many tourists don’t need a visa for Belize. Citizens of the US, Canada, the UK and the EU can enter for tourism without one, and visitors are usually given a 30-day stay. A number of other nationalities must get a visa first. The Belize Department of Immigration and Nationality publishes the official list, so check it for your passport before you book.

You’ll also need a valid passport, a return or onward ticket and enough funds for your stay.

Who Needs a Visa, by Group?

  • Visa-exempt nationalities: can enter for tourism without a visa, usually for up to 30 days. This includes citizens of the US, Canada, the UK and EU countries.
  • Visa-required nationalities: must apply before travel, through a Belize embassy, high commission or consulate, or as directed by the immigration authorities.
  • Visa-required travelers with certain visas: may be exempt for stays of up to 30 days if they hold a valid multiple-entry US, Canadian or Schengen visa, or a permanent residence card from the US or Canada.

We don’t list every country here, because the list changes. Search your nationality on the official Belize immigration visa page.

How to Apply If You Need a Visa

  1. Check your nationality on the official immigration page.
  2. Contact the nearest Belize embassy, high commission or consulate for the current application form and documents.
  3. Submit your application well before your trip.
  4. Wait for approval, then keep a printed or digital copy.

Processing can be slow. The Belize High Commission in the UK says applications are forwarded to the immigration department in Belize, and the process can take two to three months. Apply early.

Passport Rules

The Belize Tourism Board says visitors need a passport valid for at least 30 days after the date of arrival. Other sources quote different periods, and some airlines refuse boarding when a passport has less than six months left. The safest choice is to travel with at least six months of validity.

Documents to Carry

  • Your passport, with blank pages for the entry stamp.
  • A return or onward ticket.
  • Proof of funds, such as a card or bank statement.
  • Your hotel or tour booking details.
  • A copy of any visa approval, if you needed one.

Some travel guides mention an online arrival declaration form. Check the official tourism and immigration sites to see whether one applies when you travel.

Border Checks

Immigration officers may ask about the purpose of your trip, where you’re staying and how long you plan to stay. Answer simply and keep your documents handy. If you cross by land from Mexico or Guatemala, ask about vehicle and vessel permits, which are valid for 30 days and must be extended if you stay longer. Once you’re in the country, our getting around Belize guide covers buses, boats and small planes.

Fees and Extensions

Belize doesn’t charge a visa fee for visa-exempt nationalities. To stay longer than 30 days, apply for a Visitor’s Permit Extension at an immigration office before your permit expires. The Belize immigration site lists the extension fee as BZ$200 for all nationals. Visa fees for visa-required nationalities vary, so confirm them with the embassy or consulate.

Overstay Basics

Don’t overstay your permit. If you want more time, apply for an extension before it ends. Ask the immigration office about the maximum period for your nationality, because it can depend on whether you needed a visa.

Safety Notes Before You Apply

  • The US State Department rates Belize Level 2, “Exercise increased caution,” because of crime. Read the US advisory before you book.
  • Southside Belize City is rated Level 3, “Reconsider travel.” The UK FCDO also urges particular caution there.
  • Buy travel insurance that covers medical care and evacuation.

Common Mistakes to Avoid

  • Assuming your nationality is exempt without checking the official list.
  • Applying for a visa late, since processing can take weeks or months.
  • Traveling with a passport that’s close to expiry.
  • Forgetting the onward ticket, which airlines may check at check-in.
