What Are the Best Places to Visit in Belize?
The best places to visit in Belize are the Belize Barrier Reef and its islands, the Maya sites around San Ignacio, and the southern coast. The reef is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, and the inland ruins and caves are easy to combine with a few days in the Cayo District. Belize is small, but roads and boats take time, so pick two or three bases.
Reef and Islands
Ambergris Caye and San Pedro
San Pedro is the main town on Ambergris Caye, and it has the widest choice of restaurants, hotels and reef tour operators. The Hol Chan Marine Reserve is near the island and is a common snorkeling trip. Allow two to four days.
Caye Caulker
Caye Caulker is smaller and slower, and it’s easy to get around on foot. It’s popular for snorkeling trips and relaxed evenings. Allow two to three days. A water taxi from Belize City takes about 45 minutes.
The Great Blue Hole
The Great Blue Hole is a circular marine sinkhole on Lighthouse Reef, about 300 meters across and 125 meters deep. It’s part of the Belize Barrier Reef Reserve System, which UNESCO inscribed in 1996. Diving here needs experience, and non-divers often see it on a sightseeing flight. Book with a licensed operator, and check weather conditions.
Maya Sites
Xunantunich
Xunantunich sits on a limestone ridge above the Mopan River, close to the Guatemalan border and near San Ignacio. Visitors cross the river on a small hand-cranked ferry. Allow half a day.
Caracol
Caracol is the largest site in the Cayo area, deep in the forest. It’s a long day trip from San Ignacio, and road conditions can affect travel time. Check with your hotel or operator about current access.
Altun Ha
Altun Ha is the closest major site to Belize City. It’s known for a carved jade head of the Maya sun god, which is among the largest carved jade objects found. Allow two to three hours.
Lamanai
Lamanai is in the north, and many visitors reach it by boat along the river. The trip is part of the experience. Allow a full day.
Rainforest, Caves and Rivers
The Cayo District around San Ignacio is the base for rainforest walks, river trips and cave tours. Many cave sites need a licensed guide, and rules for access change. Ask your lodge to confirm which tours are open and which operators are licensed. For buses, boats and small planes between these areas, see our getting around Belize guide.
Coast, Culture and Food
Placencia and Hopkins
The southern coast has long beaches and a quieter pace. Placencia is on a peninsula, and Hopkins is a small Garifuna village with drumming and food. Allow two to three days.
Dangriga and Punta Gorda
These are centers of Garifuna culture. The big celebration is Garifuna Settlement Day on 19 November, but the towns are interesting at other times too. Allow a night or two if you’re traveling south.
Belize City
Belize City is the arrival hub. Most visitors pass through quickly. The US rates Southside Belize City Level 3, so stay out of that area, and use pre-booked taxis.
Which Place Should You Choose?
- Choose Caye Caulker if you want a simple, walkable island.
- Choose San Pedro if you want more dining and tour choices.
- Choose San Ignacio if Maya sites and rainforest matter most.
- Choose Placencia or Hopkins if you want beaches and Garifuna culture.

Passes and Tickets
Entry fees, opening hours and any reserve fees change, so we don’t list them. Check the Belize Tourism Board at travelbelize.org and the operator’s own site before you go.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Trying to fit the islands, Cayo and the south into one short trip.
- Booking an unlicensed tour. Ask to see a license first.
- Skipping a morning departure when you need to connect with a boat or flight.
- Not checking sea conditions before a reef or Blue Hole trip.
Best Places in Belize FAQs
What is the most famous place in Belize?
The Great Blue Hole is the best-known natural landmark, and the Belize Barrier Reef is the main draw for most visitors. For history, Caracol and Xunantunich are among the best-known Maya sites.
Is the Great Blue Hole worth it if I don’t dive?
Many visitors see it on a sightseeing flight instead, which takes about an hour round trip from the islands. Check the weather, since flights can be rescheduled, and choose a licensed operator.
Can I visit Maya sites without a tour?
Some sites, like Xunantunich and Altun Ha, are easy to reach independently. Caracol and cave sites are harder, so a guided trip is often simpler. Check access conditions before you go.
