Where Should You Stay in Belize?

For most first-time visitors, the best places to stay in Belize are an island such as Caye Caulker or San Pedro for the reef, and San Ignacio for Maya sites and caves. The southern coast, around Placencia and Hopkins, suits a quieter beach stay. Belize City works for airport nights only. Check the Belize travel guide for current safety advice.

We don’t list individual hotels or prices, because they change. Compare options on a booking site and read recent reviews.

Caye Caulker

Caye Caulker is a small island that’s easy to explore on foot or by bike. The water taxi from Belize City takes about 45 minutes to an hour. It’s a good choice if you want a simple stay and plan to take reef trips. Choose a place near the main street if you want restaurants close by.

San Pedro and Ambergris Caye

San Pedro is the larger island town, with more restaurants, tour operators and resort-style hotels. The water taxi from Belize City takes about 1.5 hours, and the flight from the city is roughly 15 minutes. Many resorts sit north or south of town, so check how you’d get into San Pedro and ask about golf cart or boat transfers.

San Ignacio and the Cayo District

San Ignacio is the main inland base, roughly two hours from Belize City’s airport. It’s close to Xunantunich, caves and rivers. Choose between a hotel in town, which is convenient for restaurants, and a jungle lodge outside town, which is quieter but needs transport. Ask whether the lodge arranges licensed guides.

Placencia and Hopkins

The southern coast is slower and less crowded. Placencia is on a peninsula with beaches and boat trips, and Hopkins is a small Garifuna village. Road transfers from Belize City take about two hours to Hopkins and about three to four hours to Placencia. Small planes serve Placencia and Dangriga for shorter transfers.

Belize City

Belize City is the arrival hub. Use it for a short stay near the airport, and travel on the next morning. The US rates Southside Belize City Level 3, “Reconsider travel.” Stay out of that area, and use pre-booked taxis.

Types of Stay

  • Island guesthouses and small hotels: practical and often close to the water taxi dock.
  • Beach resorts: the best choice for a relaxed stay, usually with pools and tours.
  • Jungle lodges: good for birdwatching and Maya sites, usually with meals and guided trips.
  • Vacation rentals: useful for families and longer stays, with a kitchen and more space.
  • Budget hostels: available in the main tourist towns, but check reviews and location.

Family and Practical Notes

English is the official language, which makes booking and arriving simple. Look for rooms with air conditioning or strong fans, insect screens and secure storage. For families, check the distance from the dock or road, since island hotels can involve a golf cart or boat ride.

Halal dining isn’t widely advertised. We didn’t find an official source on it, so ask your hotel in advance if you need halal meals. Seafood, rice and beans and vegetarian dishes are easy to find.

Booking Tips

  • Book early for December to April, which is the busiest period. See our best time to visit Belize guide.
  • Choose free cancellation from June to November, because hurricane season can disrupt travel.
  • Confirm the total price, including taxes and service charges, before you pay.
  • Ask how to get from the airport, water taxi dock or airstrip to the hotel, and whether the hotel meets you. Our getting around Belize guide covers the boat, bus and small-plane options.
  • Check whether the hotel arranges licensed tour operators, and ask to see licenses.

Which Area Should You Choose?

  • Choose Caye Caulker if you want a walkable island and simple snorkeling.
  • Choose San Pedro if you want dining, nightlife and a bigger choice of tours.
  • Choose San Ignacio if Maya sites and caves matter most.
  • Choose Placencia or Hopkins if you want beaches and a slower pace.

Where to Stay in Belize FAQs

Is it better to stay on Caye Caulker or San Pedro?

Caye Caulker is smaller and more relaxed, while San Pedro has more restaurants, resorts and tours. If you want a simple, walkable stay, pick Caye Caulker. If you want more choice and facilities, pick San Pedro.

Should I stay in Belize City?

Only for a short night near the airport or before an early boat or flight. Most visitors move on quickly. If you do stay, avoid Southside and use pre-booked taxis.

Where should I stay for Maya sites?

San Ignacio is the usual base for Xunantunich, caves and Caracol. Altun Ha is closer to Belize City, so you can visit it on the way to or from the airport.

Do hotels in Belize include breakfast?

Some do, but practice varies by hotel and season. Check what’s included in your booking, and ask about meal plans at lodges that are far from restaurants.
