Do you need a visa for Belgium?
It depends on your passport. UK, US, Canadian and Japanese citizens, among others, can visit Belgium without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period, because Belgium follows Schengen rules. Other nationalities usually need a Schengen C visa from a Belgian embassy or consulate before travel. Confirm your own case with the Belgian authorities before you book. For background on the country, see our Belgium travel guide.
Belgium’s Foreign Affairs ministry runs the official diplomacy website, and the Immigration Office publishes the visa FAQ. Start with those, not with third-party visa agents.
Who can enter Belgium without a visa?
The Belgian embassy pages say exemption depends on the EU’s list of visa-exempt nationalities. They name US citizens, Canadians and Japanese citizens as exempt for short stays. The UK government says British citizens can travel to the Schengen area, which includes Belgium, without a visa for up to 90 days in any 180-day period as tourists or business visitors.
Other groups can also enter without a short-stay visa:
- Citizens of EU and Schengen countries.
- Non-EU nationals who hold a valid long-stay visa or residence permit from another Schengen country, for up to 90 days, according to the Belgian embassy in Germany.
How does the 90 in 180 day rule work?
The 90 days count across the whole Schengen area, not just Belgium. Days spent in France or Germany in the previous 180 days also count. The UK government warns that if you overstay the 90-day limit you may be banned from entering Schengen countries for up to three years. Keep a list of your entry and exit dates and use an official Schengen calculator before you book a long trip.
How do you apply for a Schengen C visa?
If your nationality is not visa-exempt, you apply for a type C visa, which allows stays of up to 90 days. Belgian embassies describe these steps:
- Apply at the Belgian embassy or consulate in the country where you live. In some countries another Schengen state handles Belgian applications, so check the Foreign Affairs list.
- Create an account on the Belgian online portal, Visa on web, where it is used.
- Book an appointment for fingerprints unless you gave them to a Schengen country in the past 59 months.
- Apply early. The Belgian embassy in the US recommends at least 15 business days and no more than six months before travel.
A Schengen visa cannot be extended or changed to cover a different purpose, according to Belgian university guidance based on the official rules. For stays of more than 90 days you need a long-stay D visa, applied for before you leave. Do not enter Belgium on a C visa if you plan to stay longer.
What are the passport and entry conditions?
- Passport validity: the Belgian embassy in Japan says it must be valid for at least three months after your intended departure and issued within the previous 10 years.
- Purpose and funds: you may have to justify your trip and show enough money for your stay and onward travel.
- Security checks: entry can be refused if you are considered a threat to public order, security, health or international relations.
- Carry your passport: the UK government notes that you must carry your passport with you at all times in Belgium.
What are EES and ETIAS?
The EU’s Entry/Exit System (EES) records non-EU travellers’ entries and exits digitally. It began in October 2025 and has been fully operational at Schengen external borders since 10 April 2026, and passport stamps have been discontinued. Expect to give biometric details at your first entry, and allow extra time at busy airports. Our flights to Belgium guide explains which airport to use and how to reach the city.
ETIAS is a separate online travel authorisation for visa-exempt travellers. It was not in operation when we checked, and the Belgian embassy in the US said no action was required yet. The EU has not confirmed a new start date, so check the official Travel to Europe site before you book.
What is the arrival declaration?
Every person entering Belgium for a short stay must declare their presence within three days, according to the Belgian embassy in Poland. Since 10 April 2026 you can do this online through the My address in Belgium form instead of visiting the municipal office. Check the Foreign Nationals Office website for current instructions, because your hotel may or may not handle it for you.
