When is the best time to visit Belgium?

The best time to visit Belgium is April to June and September to October, when days are mild and the cities are less crowded than in midsummer. Summer is warm and festival-heavy, and winter is cold with Christmas markets and quiet museums. Rain can fall in every season, so pack a waterproof layer whenever you travel.

Belgium has a mild marine climate. The weather matters less here than in many countries, because so much sightseeing is indoors or in covered galleries and cafΓ©s.

What is the weather like by region?

  • Flanders and the cities: good from early spring to late autumn. Winter can bring frost and iced canals, but daylight hours are short.
  • Wallonia and the Ardennes: more seasonal. Some attractions close in winter, so April to October is usually easier.
  • The coast: pleasant in summer, but weather can change quickly. Pack layers even in July.

Rain falls in all four seasons across the country, and snow is possible in winter, especially in the Ardennes. Our Belgium itineraries show how to match a plan to the season, and the guide to getting around Belgium covers trains and trams.

Which festivals and events affect your trip?

  • Binche Carnival: the Sunday to Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, UNESCO-listed since 2008.
  • Brussels Ommegang: traditionally on the first Tuesday and Thursday of July.
  • Belgian Beer Culture Days: in 2026 they ran from 4 to 13 September in Brussels to mark 10 years of UNESCO recognition for beer culture.
  • Brussels Winter Wonders: the Christmas market runs from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, according to the official event website.

Bruges, Ghent, Antwerp, Leuven and LiΓ¨ge also hold Christmas markets from late November. Check each market’s official site for dates, because they vary by city.

How do holidays and Ramadan affect travel?

Ramadan is not a public holiday in Belgium, so sights and most shops keep their usual hours. Belgian public holidays, such as 1 May, 21 July and Christmas Day, can close shops and reduce transport services. Hotels in Brussels fill quickly during Winter Wonders, so book early if you travel from late November.

What should you pack for Belgium?

  • A waterproof jacket or compact umbrella in every season.
  • Comfortable shoes for cobbled streets in Bruges, Ghent and Brussels.
  • Layers in spring and autumn, and a warm coat for December to February.
  • A secure cross-body bag or front pocket for phone and wallet, because pickpocketing is common in crowded areas.
  • A power adapter for continental European plugs.

Best months by trip type

  • City sightseeing: April to June and September to October.
  • Christmas markets: late November to early January.
  • Low prices and quiet museums: January and February.
  • Ardennes and outdoor trips: April to October.
  • Beer and food events: September.

Which season should you choose? A decision guide

  • Choose spring if you want blossoms and comfortable walking weather.
  • Choose September to October if you want cooler air and fewer crowds.
  • Choose summer if you want festivals and the coast, and can accept higher demand.
  • Choose winter if you want markets and museums over sunshine.

Common mistakes

  • Assuming it is dry in summer and leaving the rain jacket at home.
  • Booking rooms in Brussels for late November without checking market dates.
  • Planning Ardennes trips in winter without checking opening hours.
  • Ignoring strike dates when booking a tight train-to-flight connection.

Before You Go: seasonal checklist

  • Check event dates for your month on the official city sites.
  • Check the forecast for each region.
  • Check rail strike notices on the Belgian railways site.
  • Read the UK advice and the US advisory again before departure.

Best time to visit Belgium FAQs

What is the best month to visit Belgium?

May, June and September are strong all-round choices. They offer mild weather, long days and fewer crowds than July and August. If you love Christmas markets, late November and December fit better, though rooms are busier then.

Is Belgium worth visiting in winter?

Yes, if you like Christmas markets, museums and cafΓ©s. Expect cold, damp weather and short days. Brussels Winter Wonders runs from 27 November 2026 to 3 January 2027, and quiet January and February visits are cheaper.

Does it rain a lot in Belgium?

Rain can fall in any season, so it is wise to carry a waterproof layer. Showers are often short rather than all-day, but plan indoor options such as museums or covered galleries for wetter days.

When is the best time to see Bruges?

Late spring and early autumn are comfortable and a little quieter than midsummer. Go early in the morning or stay overnight to see the canals with fewer day visitors, and check train strike notices before you travel.
