What Does a 3 Day Angola Itinerary Look Like?

  • Day 1, Luanda: visit the Fortaleza de São Miguel and spend the afternoon at Miradouro da Lua.
  • Day 2, Kissama National Park: take a guided day trip or stay one night in the park’s chalets. Book through an operator.
  • Day 3, departure: leave early for the airport, which is about 40 km from the city.

This plan suits layovers and long weekends. Keep your last day free of activities.

What Does a 5 Day Angola Itinerary Look Like?

  • Day 1: Luanda city sights.
  • Day 2: Kissama National Park.
  • Day 3: fly from Luanda to Lubango.
  • Day 4: see Tundavala and the Christ the King statue.
  • Day 5: drive part of the Serra da Leba road, then fly back to Luanda.

Flights to Lubango are not daily on every schedule, so check the days before you fix your dates.

What Does a 7 Day Angola Itinerary Look Like?

  • Days 1 and 2: Luanda, with Kissama as a day trip.
  • Day 3: fly to Catumbela, then continue to Benguela.
  • Days 4 and 5: Benguela and the beaches of the province.
  • Day 6: travel to Lubango by road, about 5.5 hours.
  • Day 7: Tundavala in the morning, then a flight to Luanda for your connection.

Allow a buffer day before an international flight, because internal delays happen.

What Does a 10 Day Angola Itinerary Look Like?

  • Day 1: Luanda.
  • Day 2: Kissama National Park.
  • Day 3: drive to Malanje, a full day on the road.
  • Day 4: Kalandula Falls and the Black Stones of Pungo Andongo.
  • Day 5: return to Luanda.
  • Day 6: fly to Catumbela and continue to Benguela.
  • Day 7: beach day in Benguela Province.
  • Day 8: road to Lubango.
  • Day 9: Tundavala, Christ the King and the Serra da Leba road.
  • Day 10: fly to Luanda and depart.

The Malanje leg is the most tiring part, so swap it out for a rest day in Benguela if you’d rather go slowly.

How Does the Season Change Your Route?

Season matters most for the long road legs. From May to September, the dry months, drives such as Luanda to Kalandula Falls are easier, but these are also the busiest months, so book vehicles and chalets early. In the rainy season, from November to April, some roads and bridges can become impassable, according to the US State Department, so fly where you can and keep road days short. Our best time to visit Angola guide sets out the conditions month by month.

How Do You Get Around?

Most plans above mix a domestic flight with road transfers and pre-booked taxis. Fares, timetables, driving rules and road safety notes are covered in our getting around Angola guide, so check it before you fix your dates.

Which Itinerary Should You Choose?

  • Choose 3 days if you’re stopping over and want the capital plus one wildlife outing.
  • Choose 5 days if you want scenery and don’t mind one domestic flight.
  • Choose 7 days if you want a mix of city, beach and highlands.
  • Choose 10 days if you’re comfortable with long drives and want a waterfall as well.

Tips and Common Mistakes

  • Don’t plan more than one long road day in a row.
  • Don’t walk around Luanda after dark, and never travel alone at night.
  • Book guides, vehicles and chalets before you arrive.
  • Keep your international departure day free of other plans.
  • Check the US travel advisory before you set your route, and avoid areas named in the warnings.

Angola Itinerary FAQs

How many days do you need in Angola?

Seven days is a sensible minimum for Luanda plus one region. Ten days lets you add a second region without constant rushing. Distances are long and some flights run only a few days a week, so build in spare time.

Can you do Angola without a tour operator?

You can handle Luanda alone, but wildlife parks, long road trips and remote sights are easier with an operator or local guide. The FCDO advises travelling with people who know the area when you leave major towns.

Is it better to fly or drive between cities?

Fly when there’s a direct route, because road times are long. Luanda to Lubango takes about 1.5 to 2 hours by air and the road journey is very long. Drive for short regional hops, such as Lubango to Namibe.

How far is Kalandula Falls from Luanda?

About 360 km by road, which is a full day of driving. Most visitors stay a night or two in Malanje and see the falls and the nearby Black Stones together.
