The best time to visit most of Angola is the cool, dry season from May to September, known locally as Cacimbo. Skies are clearer and roads are easier. The rainy season runs from about October to April and brings heat, humidity and heavy downpours, although waterfalls look fuller and the landscape turns green.

How Do Angola’s Seasons Work?

SeasonMonthsWhat to expect
Dry (Cacimbo)May to SeptemberLittle rain, cooler air, clearer skies, better road access
TransitionLate September to OctoberHumidity rises and the rains return, mostly in the north and centre
RainyNovember to AprilHot, humid, frequent downpours, with the heaviest rain generally from February to April in the north

The World Bank’s Climate Knowledge Portal gives rough national averages of 22 to 23 degrees Celsius in the rainy season and 18 to 20 degrees in Cacimbo. See its Angola climate page for the data. Local conditions differ a lot from the coast to the highlands.

What Is the Weather Like Month by Month?

  • January: the rainy season is in full swing, with high humidity and frequent downpours in most regions.
  • February: some of the heaviest rain in the north. Rural roads can be hard going.
  • March: still wet and warm. Conditions start to ease towards the end of the month.
  • April: the changeover month, and one of the wettest in Luanda by rainy-day count.
  • May: the dry season begins, with clearer skies, cooler temperatures and drier roads.
  • June: cool and dry. Good for wildlife viewing, city walks and road trips. Mornings can be grey and misty.
  • July: dry. It is one of the coolest months.
  • August: still dry and one of the most popular months. The Nossa Senhora do Monte festivities in Lubango have been held in August.
  • September: the dry season winds down. Air quality can dip, and humidity starts to build.
  • October: the rains start to return, especially in the north and centre.
  • November: the rainy season is under way. Independence Day is on 11 November, so expect a public holiday.
  • December: hot and humid. Christmas and New Year fall in the wet season.

Festival dates change, so confirm them with the organisers before you book.

How Does the Weather Differ by Region?

  • Luanda and the coast: warm all year. The Benguela Current moderates the coastal climate, and the dry season is less hot and humid.
  • The north: humid tropical, with the rainy season from October to April.
  • Highlands (Lubango, Huambo): cooler and more temperate than the coast. Lubango has a tropical highland climate, and the dry season there runs from May to September.
  • The south (Namibe): generally drier than the north, which is helpful when the rains return elsewhere.

Do Holidays and Ramadan Affect Travel?

Public holidays such as Christmas and Independence Day on 11 November can affect closures and transport. We found no official source showing that Ramadan changes travel conditions in Angola. Muslim travellers who need halal food should ask hotels and restaurants ahead of time, especially outside Luanda. Check public holiday dates when you book internal flights, because seats can be limited.

What Should You Pack?

  • Light, quick-drying clothes. Humidity can be high, especially in the wet season.
  • A light jacket for cooler Cacimbo mornings and highland evenings.
  • A rain jacket from October to April.
  • Sun protection: hat, sunglasses and sunscreen.
  • Insect repellent. Ireland’s Department of Foreign Affairs says malaria is a constant threat in Angola.
  • Sturdy shoes for rocky viewpoints and waterfall paths.
  • A copy of your yellow fever certificate and your insurance papers.

Which Months Are Best for Each Trip Type?

  • Wildlife: June to September. Animals gather near water and the vegetation is thinner.
  • Waterfalls: the rainy season gives fuller flow, but dry-season visits are easier by road. Kalandula Falls is a good example of this trade-off.
  • Beaches: May to October, when it’s warm and mostly dry.
  • Hiking: May to October, when trails are in better shape.
  • Cities and food: June to September, with lower humidity for walking.
  • Festivals: August in Lubango, with dates that change each year.

Which Month Should You Choose?

  • Choose June to August for first-timers who want the easiest conditions. Prices and demand tend to be higher, so book early.
  • Choose May or September for a shoulder-season trip with fewer crowds. September air quality can dip.
  • Choose the rainy season if you want green scenery and fuller waterfalls and can handle humidity and slower travel.

Common Mistakes

  • Booking a long road trip in February or March without a 4×4 and a local driver.
  • Expecting blue skies every day in Cacimbo. It can be cooler and greyer than people expect.
  • Planning around a festival date you haven’t confirmed.
  • Forgetting that southern and highland areas have a different rhythm from the north.

Best Time to Visit Angola FAQs

Is Angola hot all year?

The coast and north are warm year-round, but Cacimbo brings lower temperatures from May to September. Highland areas such as Lubango feel cooler than Luanda. A light jacket is useful for cooler mornings and evenings.

Is the rainy season a bad time to visit?

Not always. It’s hot and humid, and rural roads can be hard going, but landscapes are green and waterfalls look fuller. It suits travellers who stick to cities or have a good vehicle and a local guide.

When is Kalandula Falls at its best?

It depends on what you want. The falls usually flow strongest during and after the rains, while the dry season gives clearer roads and sharper views. Many visitors pick the shoulder months, May or October, for a balance.

Can you go to the beach in Cacimbo?

Yes. Cacimbo means cooler and drier rather than cold, so beach days still work. Expect cooler mornings and some haze, and keep sun protection handy.

When are Angola’s main festivals?

The Nossa Senhora do Monte festivities in Lubango have been held in August, and the Benguela International Fair (FIB) is usually held in September. Check dates with the organisers each year.
