The best places to visit in Angola, grouped by type, with how long to spend at Luanda, Kalandula Falls, Lubango, Benguela and more.

Last checked: November 2026

The best places to visit in Angola are Luanda for history and city life, Kissama National Park for wildlife, Kalandula Falls for scenery, Lubango and Namibe for highland and desert views, Benguela for beaches and Mbanza Kongo for heritage. Distances are long, so most trips focus on two or three of these.

Before you pick a route, check the current advisories. Our Angola visa guide summarises the US and UK warnings, including the areas they name.

Which Places Are Best for History and Heritage?

Mbanza Kongo

Mbanza Kongo, in Zaire Province, was the capital of the Kingdom of Kongo. UNESCO inscribed Mbanza Kongo, Vestiges of the Capital of the former Kingdom of Kongo in 2017, and it is still Angola’s only World Heritage Site. It’s a long way from Luanda, so ask a local operator about current flight and road options. Allow half a day to a full day on site.

Luanda

The capital has the old Fortaleza de SΓ£o Miguel, a historic fort. Near the city, Miradouro da Lua is a well-known viewpoint that appears in many Angola travel guides. Give Luanda one to two days if you’re also heading elsewhere.

Pungo Andongo Black Stones

These dark rock formations are in Malanje Province, close to the Kwanza rapids. They pair well with Kalandula Falls, so treat them as one trip rather than two.

Which Places Are Best for Nature and Wildlife?

Kalandula Falls

Kalandula Falls, on the Lucala River in Malanje Province, drops more than 100 metres. Sources give different widths, so don’t plan around an exact figure. Most sources put the falls roughly 360 km east of Luanda, and the drive takes a full day, so a 4×4 helps outside the main highways. Most visitors give the area two days, including Malanje and the Black Stones. Flow is usually fuller during and just after the rains, while the dry season gives clearer roads.

Kissama National Park

Kissama (also spelled Quicama) is the easiest wildlife stop from Luanda, and it’s popular because it’s relatively close to the capital. Some visitors stay overnight in chalets by the river. Book through a tour operator or the park, and confirm access and fees before you go.

Cangandala National Park

Cangandala is Angola’s smallest national park and is known for the rare giant sable antelope. Numbers are uncertain, so go for the landscape and birdlife instead of expecting a sighting.

Tundavala, Lubango and the Serra da Leba road

Lubango sits in the highlands and has a cooler feel than the coast. Its sights include Tundavala and the Christ the King statue. From Lubango, the road to Namibe winds down the Serra da Leba, a famous mountain serpentine. The drive is about 190 km and takes roughly 2.5 hours without stops.

Namibe and the Namib Desert

Namibe is the coastal gateway to Angola’s section of the Namib Desert. It’s drier than the north and centre, which makes it a useful option when the rest of the country is wet. Pair it with Lubango for a two to three day loop.

Cabinda’s rainforest is often listed in travel articles, but the UK FCDO advises against all but essential travel to most of Cabinda Province. We don’t suggest it for a first trip.

Which Places Are Best for Beaches?

Benguela Province is often named as home to Angola’s best beaches, including BaΓa Farta. Beach weather works even in the cool dry season, called Cacimbo, because it just means less heat. Plan two days on the coast, and pack for strong sun. Our where to stay in Angola page covers coastal bases.

Which Cities Are Best for Food and Culture?

  • Luanda: the widest choice of restaurants. Try funge with fish and other Angolan staples.
  • Benguela: hosts the Benguela International Fair (FIB), a trade fair with concerts. It is usually held in September.
  • Lubango: hosts the Nossa Senhora do Monte festivities, which have been held in August.

Festival dates move from year to year, so confirm them with the organisers.

Passes, Tickets and Planning Tips

We couldn’t find an official multi-site pass for Angola. Ask each site or your operator about entry fees and permits, because they change. The government’s tourism and investment portal, visit.ao, is a good place to start for official information. For travel times and routes between these places, see our getting around Angola guide.

Common mistakes

  • Trying to fit Luanda, Kalandula and Lubango into one long weekend.
  • Driving long distances at night.
  • Assuming remote parks have easy access in the rainy season.
  • Leaving the booking of guides and vehicles to the last minute.
