Algeria Itineraries: 5, 7 and 10 Days

Algeria itineraries for 3, 5, 7 and 10 days across Algiers, Tipasa, Constantine, Djémila, Timgad and the M’Zab Valley, with real travel times.

Last updated:

Plan Algeria by region, not as one big loop. A 5-day trip covers Algiers, Tipasa and Constantine, a 7-day trip adds the M’Zab Valley, and a 10-day trip adds Djémila and Timgad. Flights save the most time on long legs, and none of the routes below enter the areas named in the safety notice.

Quick answer: With five days, spend two in Algiers, one in Tipasa and two in Constantine. With seven, add Ghardaïa and the M’Zab Valley. With ten, add a two-day Roman circuit through Djémila and Timgad, and use domestic flights for the long legs. Check your government’s advice before you book.

Safety notice for this Algeria guide (checked November 2026). The US Department of State rates Algeria Level 2, “exercise increased caution,” because of terrorism and kidnapping. Its advisory, renewed on 25 August 2026, says not to travel to areas near the eastern and southern borders, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Illizi, In Guezzam, In Salah, Tamanrasset, the mountainous areas of Tébessa Province, or Tindouf, or to remote parts of the Sahara without an organized tour group. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all travel to parts of Algeria, including areas within 30 km of the borders with Libya, Mauritania, Mali and Niger. Read the US advisory and the UK travel advice again before you book.

What Should I Check Before Choosing a Route?

  • Visa: most visitors need one before departure. The Algeria visa guide explains the steps.
  • Season: spring and autumn suit the north, and Ghardaïa is best from October to April. See the best time to visit Algeria guide.
  • Guides: some M’Zab towns, such as Beni Isguen, require a local guide.
  • Transport: read the getting around Algeria guide for flights, trains and buses.

What Can I See in 3 Days?

Spend two days in Algiers and one in Tipasa. In Algiers, walk the Kasbah, visit the Great Mosque of Algiers and rest in the Jardin d’Essai du Hamma. Tipasa is a day trip to Roman ruins on the coast, often combined with nearby Cherchell.

How Do I Spend 5 Days in Algeria?

  • Days 1 and 2, Algiers: the Kasbah, the Great Mosque and the garden. Take the metro to Place des Martyrs, next to the Kasbah.
  • Day 3, Tipasa: the coastal Roman site, with time for the shore.
  • Days 4 and 5, Constantine: Constantine lies roughly 320 kilometres south-east of Algiers. Walk the Sidi M’Cid bridge and the Mellah Slimane footbridge, visit the Emir Abdelkader Mosque, then fly or take the train back to Algiers.

How Do I Spend 7 Days in Algeria?

  • Days 1 to 3: Algiers, with a day trip to Tipasa.
  • Days 4 and 5: Constantine, with a half-day trip to the Roman ruins at Tiddis, about 30 kilometres away.
  • Day 6: return to Algiers and fly to Ghardaïa, about 600 kilometres south of the capital.
  • Day 7: visit the M’Zab towns with a local guide, then fly back to Algiers. Two days here would feel less rushed.

Dress modestly in the M’Zab towns, and ask before you photograph anyone, especially women.

How Do I Spend 10 Days in Algeria?

  • Days 1 to 3: Algiers and Tipasa.
  • Days 4 and 5: Constantine and Tiddis.
  • Days 6 and 7: Djémila and Timgad. Djémila lies about 50 kilometres north-east of Sétif, and Timgad stands in the Aurès Mountains. Distances are long, so arrange a driver or a guided tour in advance.
  • Days 8 and 9: fly to Ghardaïa and explore the M’Zab Valley.
  • Day 10: fly back to Algiers for your departure.

For a quieter extra stop, Al Qal’a of Beni Hammad is a UNESCO site about 36 kilometres north-east of M’Sila. Plan it as a long day trip.

Which Itinerary Should I Choose?

  • Choose 3 days if you want a short city and coast break.
  • Choose 5 days if you want two cities and one Roman site without internal flights.
  • Choose 7 days if the M’Zab Valley is your priority and you’re travelling between October and April.
  • Choose 10 days if you want the Roman sites as well, and you’re happy to hire a driver.
  • Choose a heritage-only route if you want the Kasbah, Tipasa, Djémila and Timgad, and prefer to skip the south.

Common Mistakes

  • Trying to cover the whole country on one trip.
  • Booking a tight connection before an international flight home.
  • Waiting too long to book a guide and flights for the south.
  • Photographing government or security areas, where rules can apply.
  • Relying on cards alone; carry some cash for small purchases.

Algeria Itinerary FAQs

How many days do I need in Algeria?

Five days is enough for Algiers, Tipasa and Constantine at a steady pace. Seven days adds the M’Zab Valley. Ten days allows the Roman sites at Djémila and Timgad, but the long distances mean you should still pick regions, not try to see everything.

Can I do an Algeria itinerary without a tour?

The northern city routes work independently, using flights, trains and taxis. For the M’Zab towns and the Roman sites, a local guide or driver helps, and some M’Zab towns require a guide. Governments advise an organized tour for remote Sahara travel.

Which itinerary suits a first visit?

The 5-day route suits most first visits. It keeps the travel manageable, and it pairs two very different cities with a Roman coastal site. Add the M’Zab Valley later if you return between October and April.
