Where to Stay in Algeria: Best Areas by City

Where to stay in Algeria: the best areas in Algiers, plus Constantine, Ghardaïa and Tipasa, with family-friendly notes and booking tips.

Last updated:

For a first visit, stay in central Algiers near the Grande Poste and the metro. In Constantine, choose a hotel in the centre near the old town, and for the M’Zab Valley, use Ghardaïa as your base. Hotel names and ownership change, so check the current name and recent reviews before you book.

Quick answer: Stay in Algiers-Centre for a first visit, because the metro, the Kasbah and the main streets are close. Choose El-Hamma for gardens and space, the western hills for quiet, and the airport area only for early or late flights. Outside Algiers, stay in central Constantine and in Ghardaïa.

Safety notice for this Algeria guide (checked November 2026). The US Department of State rates Algeria Level 2, “exercise increased caution,” because of terrorism and kidnapping. Its advisory, renewed on 25 August 2026, says not to travel to areas near the eastern and southern borders, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Illizi, In Guezzam, In Salah, Tamanrasset, the mountainous areas of Tébessa Province, or Tindouf, or to remote parts of the Sahara without an organized tour group. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all travel to parts of Algeria, including areas within 30 km of the borders with Libya, Mauritania, Mali and Niger. Read the US advisory and the UK travel advice again before you book.

Algiers-Centre is the 19th-century city centre, with the Grande Poste, the shop-lined Rue Didouche Mourad and the seafront above the port. Place des Martyrs and the Kasbah are a short walk or metro ride away. El-Hamma sits beside the Jardin d’Essai and the National Museum of Fine Arts, and the Sofitel Algiers Hamma Garden is one known address there.

The western hills are mostly residential. Hôtel El Djazair, formerly the St George, stands in El Mouradia, and The Legacy Luxury Hotel in Hydra was formerly the Radisson Blu. Near the airport, the Hyatt Regency Algiers Airport sits at Houari Boumediene Airport. Ownership and branding change, so confirm the current name on a map before you pay.

Where Should I Stay in Constantine?

Stay in the city centre, close to the old town and the bridges. You will walk a lot, and the viewpoint at Sidi M’Cid and the Mellah Slimane footbridge are easier to reach from a central base. Constantine has an airport and a rail station, so pick the side of town that suits your arrival.

Where Should I Stay for the M’Zab Valley?

Ghardaïa is the main base for the five M’Zab towns. Choose a stay in or near Ghardaïa, and arrange a local guide and transfers in advance, because some towns, such as Beni Isguen, require a guide for visitors. Winter nights are cold, so ask about heating. Ask a local operator whether a family-run guesthouse is available for your dates.

Where Should I Stay for Tipasa and the Roman Sites?

Most visitors see Tipasa as a day trip from Algiers, so a hotel in the capital works well. For Djémila and Timgad, plan an overnight stay in a nearby town and book a driver, then ask your hotel or operator which town fits your route. The best places guide lists how long each site needs.

Which Type of Stay Should I Choose?

  • International-style hotels: choose these in Algiers if you want reliable services and a front desk that speaks English.
  • Smaller local hotels: choose these in Constantine or Ghardaïa if the location matters more than extras.
  • Apartments: choose one for a longer stay or a family that wants a kitchen.

Are There Halal-Friendly and Family Options?

Algeria is a Muslim-majority country, so halal food is easy to find in hotels and restaurants. Many hotels have family rooms. If a feature such as connecting rooms or a pool matters to you, check the hotel’s own page or ask before you book.

Which Taxes and Fees Should I Expect?

Taxes, service charges and local fees differ by property and can change. We don’t list rates because we couldn’t confirm an official schedule. Ask for the full total in writing, confirm how the hotel takes payment, and keep the booking confirmation for your visa application.

Where to Stay in Algeria FAQs

Which area of Algiers is best for first-time visitors?

Algiers-Centre suits most first visits. It has the Grande Poste, Rue Didouche Mourad and metro stations, and the Kasbah is close. The streets are steep and busy, so pick a hotel near a metro stop and read recent reviews about noise.

Do I need a hotel booking for my Algeria visa?

Often yes. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs accepts a hotel reservation, a legalized certificate of accommodation or a travel agency certificate as proof of stay. Your embassy may add other rules, so follow its own checklist and choose a booking you can confirm.

How far ahead should I book a hotel in Algeria?

Book early for July, August and Eid, when families travel and demand rises. In other months, a few weeks ahead is usually enough in Algiers. Book earlier for Ghardaïa and the Roman sites, where choice is smaller.
