Best Time to Visit Algeria: A Month-by-Month Guide

Best time to visit Algeria month by month: spring and autumn suit most trips, the Sahara is best October to March, and summer is very hot.

Last updated:

The best time to visit Algeria for most trips is spring (March to May) or autumn (September to November). Coastal cities and Roman sites are comfortable then, and the Sahara’s main season runs from October to March. Summer is hot almost everywhere inland, and winter is cool and wet on the coast.

Quick answer: Choose April, May, October or early November for a mix of cities, Roman ruins and the M’Zab Valley. Pick November to March for the Sahara, and avoid July and August inland. Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February 2027, and the official date depends on the moon sighting.

Safety notice for this Algeria guide (checked November 2026). The US Department of State rates Algeria Level 2, “exercise increased caution,” because of terrorism and kidnapping. Its advisory, renewed on 25 August 2026, says not to travel to areas near the eastern and southern borders, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Illizi, In Guezzam, In Salah, Tamanrasset, the mountainous areas of Tébessa Province, or Tindouf, or to remote parts of the Sahara without an organized tour group. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all travel to parts of Algeria, including areas within 30 km of the borders with Libya, Mauritania, Mali and Niger. Read the US advisory and the UK travel advice again before you book.

What Is the Weather Like Month by Month in Algeria?

  • January: cool and wet on the northern coast, with snow on higher ground in the Atlas ranges and the Aurès. Days are pleasant in the Sahara and nights are cold. Yennayer, the Amazigh new year, falls around 12 January.
  • February: still cool in the north, and rain is possible. Ramadan is expected to start around 8 February 2027.
  • March: spring reaches the coast. Ramadan is expected to end around 8 March, with Eid al-Fitr on about 9 or 10 March, so transport gets busy.
  • April: one of the best months for Algiers, Tipasa and the Roman sites. The M’Zab Valley is still comfortable, though warmer by the end of the month.
  • May: warm days in the north and rising heat inland. Eid al-Adha is expected in mid-May 2027.
  • June: hot inland, with sea breezes on the coast. Desert travel gets harder.
  • July: the hottest period in the interior, and the coast fills with holiday crowds. Independence Day on 5 July is a public holiday.
  • August: very hot inland and humid on the coast. Book early, and expect busy beaches.
  • September: the heat eases, and the sea stays warm.
  • October: a strong month for the north, and the Sahara season begins.
  • November: mild in the north with more rain, and good for the M’Zab Valley. Revolution Day on 1 November is a public holiday.
  • December: cool and wet on the coast, with cold desert nights, especially from mid-December to mid-January.

What Is the Weather Like by Region?

  • Mediterranean north (Algiers, Tipasa, Annaba, Béjaïa): hot, drier summers and cooler, wetter winters.
  • High plateaus and the Aurès (Sétif, Batna, Timgad): a bigger swing between day and night than on the coast, with frost or snow possible at height in winter.
  • Sahara (Ghardaïa and the M’Zab Valley): the main season is October to March, and some guides stretch it to April. Summer heat is extreme, and temperatures drop fast after sunset.
  • Mountains: conditions change quickly with height, so pack layers.

How Do Ramadan and Holidays Affect Travel?

Ramadan moves about 11 days earlier each year. During the month, daytime restaurant hours and public schedules may change, and evenings become more active. Eid holidays bring heavy travel, and bus and train operators add or change services. The weekend in Algeria falls on Friday and Saturday. Official dates depend on the moon sighting, so confirm them before you book.

What Should I Pack?

  • Spring and autumn: layers and a light rain jacket for the coast.
  • Winter: a warm coat for the coast and the plateaus, and warm clothes for desert mornings and evenings.
  • Desert trips: light cotton for the day, warm layers for the night, sun protection and a scarf.
  • Everywhere: comfortable shoes for the Kasbah, Roman sites and Constantine’s bridges, and clothes that cover shoulders and knees at religious sites.

Should I Check Safety Advice Too?

UK travel advice also updated its wildfire information in July 2026, so check conditions in northern areas before a summer trip.
