Most visitors fly into Algiers Houari Boumediene Airport (ALG), the country’s main international gateway. Air Algérie has the widest network, and several European, Gulf and Turkish airlines also serve Algiers. Check visa rules before you pay for a ticket, because most travelers need a visa before departure, as the Algeria visa guide explains.
Quick answer: Fly into Algiers (ALG) for nearly every trip. It’s the main hub for Air Algérie, it has the most international routes, and it gives the best connections for onward travel. Oran, Constantine and Annaba have their own airports, but check your airline’s route map before you count on them for an international arrival.

Safety notice for this Algeria guide (checked November 2026). The US Department of State rates Algeria Level 2, “exercise increased caution,” because of terrorism and kidnapping. Its advisory, renewed on 25 August 2026, says not to travel to areas near the eastern and southern borders, Bordj Badji Mokhtar, Illizi, In Guezzam, In Salah, Tamanrasset, the mountainous areas of Tébessa Province, or Tindouf, or to remote parts of the Sahara without an organized tour group. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth & Development Office (FCDO) advises against all travel to parts of Algeria, including areas within 30 km of the borders with Libya, Mauritania, Mali and Niger. Read the US advisory and the UK travel advice again before you book.
Which Airport Should I Fly Into for Algeria?
| Airport | Code | Role for visitors |
|---|---|---|
| Algiers Houari Boumediene | ALG | Main international gateway, in Dar El Beïda |
| Oran Ahmed Ben Bella | ORN | Regional airport for the west |
| Constantine Mohamed Boudiaf | CZL | Regional airport for the east |
| Annaba Rabah Bitat | AAE | Regional airport on the north-east coast |
Houari Boumediene Airport lies about 17 kilometres east of central Algiers. Terminal 4 opened in April 2019 and took over international flights, so confirm your terminal with your airline before you travel. Airport management said the airport handled more than ten million passengers in 2025.
Which Airlines Fly to Algeria?
Air Algérie is the national airline, and it flies from Algiers to cities in Europe, Africa, the Middle East, North America and Asia. France is the largest international market. Other airlines that serve Algiers include Air France, Turkish Airlines, Lufthansa, Qatar Airways, Saudia, EgyptAir and Transavia France, and Tassili Airlines flies some routes, including Paris.
Routes change with the season. Air Algérie added Libreville and Luanda to its African network in June 2026, for example, so check the Air Algérie website and your booking site for the current timetable instead of relying on a fixed route list.
How Long Is the Flight to Algiers?
- From Paris: about two and a half hours.
- From North America: most travelers from the United States connect in Paris, London or Frankfurt, and Air Algérie lists Montreal among its routes.
- From Asia and the Gulf: connect through Istanbul or Doha, or check Air Algérie’s own long-haul routes.
Algeria stays on UTC+1 all year and doesn’t change its clocks. The time gap with Europe therefore shifts twice a year, so check it when you plan your first day.
How Do I Get From Algiers Airport to the City?
- Taxi or ride-hailing app: apps such as Yassir show the fare before the ride, and licensed taxis also serve the airport. Some travelers report trouble signing up with a foreign phone number, so create the account before you travel. Allow extra time at peak hours, because roads on the eastern side of the city are congested.
- Airport train: a rail station opened on 29 April 2019, with services toward Agha station in central Algiers. Check the timetable on the SNTF website before you plan around it.
- Metro: the metro doesn’t reach the airport yet. An extension from El Harrach, 9.5 kilometres long with nine stations, is under construction, and ministry statements point to 2027, with some sections possibly opening earlier. Don’t plan your arrival around it.
- Private transfer: your hotel can arrange one in advance, which helps on a late arrival.

- Arrive about three hours before an international departure.
- Choose a changeable fare until your visa is approved.
