Where to Stay in Cameroon

Where to base yourself in Cameroon, what to check before booking accommodation and how to compare hotel offers safely.

Choosing where to stay in Cameroon is mostly about location, security and practicalities rather than star ratings. We did not source current hotel names or prices for this guide, so we do not list individual properties or rates. Instead, this page explains which areas visitors usually base themselves in, what to check before you book and how to compare offers. Read it alongside the itinerary guide and the best places guide.

Where to Base Yourself

Douala

Douala is the main port and commercial city, and most international visitors arrive at its airport. Staying here makes sense for a first or last night, because it reduces road travel after a long flight. Accommodation tends to cluster around business areas and routes used by travellers, and the FCDO notes armed robbery and muggings in the city, so choose a place that can arrange transfers and advise on safe areas.

Yaounde

Yaounde, the capital, is a base for museums, markets and government institutions. It has a second international airport, Yaounde Nsimalen. The FCDO lists muggings and armed robbery as a risk, so look for accommodation in a secure setting that can book pre-arranged taxis and has reliable staff at reception during the night.

Kribi

Kribi on the Atlantic coast is where many visitors look for beach accommodation. The coast is humid all year, and rain is heavier from about June to September according to the sources we checked, so ask about drainage, air conditioning and mosquito protection. Check how the property arranges transport from Douala, since night travel is discouraged.

Other Areas

The western highlands, the southern rainforest and some national parks have limited accommodation options. Several famous areas, including Buea, Limbe, Maroua and Waza, are under government advisories, so we do not recommend booking accommodation there while the warnings remain. The FCDO says travel insurance may be invalid if you travel against its advice.

What to Check Before You Book

  • Location and access: ask how far the property is from the airport and how transfers are arranged during daylight.
  • Security: check for secure entrances, staff at reception overnight and safe storage for passports and valuables.
  • Power and water: ask about backup power and water supply, and check reviews for recent comments.
  • Air conditioning and mosquito protection: important given the humid climate and the high malaria risk reported by traveladvisory.io.
  • Payment methods: confirm whether cards are accepted, since ATMs are rare outside larger towns and fees can be high.
  • Cancellation terms: read the rules carefully, as flights and visas may change your dates.
  • Documents: keep a copy of your passport and visa, because the FCDO says to carry ID or a certified copy.

Booking Tips

Book your first and last nights in advance, especially around festivals such as the Ngondo festival in Douala in late November or early December. Share your accommodation details with family or your embassy, keep confirmations offline and ask the property to confirm any airport pickup in writing. If you plan to use a travel agency or operator, check that they can explain current security conditions. Mobile coverage is limited outside major towns, so download maps and confirmation emails before you leave a city.

Neighbourhood Safety Basics

Even in the main cities, avoid walking alone at night, keep valuables hidden and use pre-arranged taxis rather than hailing cars. The FCDO also warns of terrorist attacks, so stay informed through official advice and local contacts. Choose accommodation where staff can advise on current conditions rather than relying only on online descriptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Where should I stay on a first trip to Cameroon?

Most first trips use Douala or Yaounde as a base because of the international airports. Kribi is an option for beach time. Avoid areas covered by government advisories.

Are hotel prices listed on this page?

No. We did not source current prices or property names, so check live offers on partner sites and confirm the final price, taxes and cancellation terms.

Should I book airport transfers?

Yes. The FCDO advises using pre-arranged taxis rather than hailing cars, and night travel is discouraged, so ask your accommodation to arrange transport.

Is it safe to stay in Limbe or Buea?

Buea is in the South-West region, where the UK advises against all travel and Canada advises avoiding all travel, and the FCDO advises against all but essential travel to Limbe. We do not recommend booking there while those warnings remain.

Do hotels accept credit cards?

It varies. ATMs are rare outside larger towns, so confirm payment methods with the property before you arrive and carry some cash.

Official Safety Advice

Always read the latest government advice before booking. The UK FCDO advises against all travel to the Bakassi Peninsula, the North-West and South-West regions, most of the Far North and areas within 40 km of the borders with the Central African Republic, Chad and Nigeria, and against all but essential travel to Limbe, the North region and some areas around Maroua. The Government of Canada advises avoiding all travel to the Far North, the North-West and South-West regions and areas within 30 km of the Nigeria, Chad and Central African Republic borders, and avoiding non-essential travel to the North and Adamaoua regions. We could not read the US State Department page directly, so check it yourself. Official pages: UK FCDO, Government of Canada and US Department of State. Travel insurance may be invalid if you travel against official advice.
