Most travellers reach Cameroon by air through Douala or Yaounde, usually with a connection in Europe, Africa or Turkey. This guide explains the main airports, which airlines and routes appear in the sample data we found and how to plan a booking. The route information comes from a sample airport table, not an official timetable, so check airline schedules before you buy. We did not source fares, so we do not quote prices. Main Airports
Douala International Airport (DLA)
Douala is the main gateway. The sample data we found lists Camair-Co, Kenya Airways, Afrijet, Ethiopian Airlines, ASKY and Royal Air Maroc, with routes to cities such as Paris, Brussels, Addis Ababa, Nairobi, Libreville, Malabo, Lome and N’Djamena. Air France and Brussels Airlines are named as serving Europe.
Yaounde Nsimalen International Airport (NSI)
Yaounde Nsimalen serves the capital. The sample data lists Camair-Co, Afrijet, ASKY, Ethiopian Airlines, Turkish Airlines and Air Cote d’Ivoire, with routes including Paris, Brussels, Addis Ababa and Istanbul.
Domestic Airports
Garoua (GOU), Maroua Salak (MVR) and N’Gaoundere (NGE) are served by Camair-Co in the sample data. Garoua and Maroua are in areas covered by FCDO advice against travel or against all but essential travel, so check the advice before considering any flight to the north.
Connecting From North America, Asia and Elsewhere
The sample data indicates there are no nonstop flights from the United States to Cameroon, so most travellers connect through Paris, Brussels, Addis Ababa, Istanbul, Casablanca or Nairobi. Travellers from Asia and the Middle East often connect through Istanbul or Addis Ababa, while travellers within Africa may use regional carriers through hubs such as Lome, Libreville or Nairobi. Confirm which of these routes currently operate and whether the airline you choose has a through ticket.
Planning Your Booking
- Visa first: World Travel Guide says visas on arrival are not available at Yaounde or Douala airports, so have your e-visa or embassy visa ready before you buy a non-refundable ticket if you can.
- Yellow fever certificate: proof of vaccination is required, according to World Travel Guide, Wikipedia and the Government of Canada.
- Passport validity: at least six months beyond arrival according to World Travel Guide.
- Return or onward ticket: the Government of Canada says an onward or return ticket is required for visa travellers.
- Arrival time: aim for a daytime arrival, because the FCDO discourages night travel on Cameroon’s roads.
Choosing Between Douala and Yaounde
Douala is the better-connected gateway in the sample data and is closer to the coast and Kribi. Yaounde is better for the capital and government business. Many travellers fly into one and out of the other on an open-jaw ticket, which avoids a long return by road. Remember that the FCDO notes accidents are common on the Yaounde to Douala road, so a domestic flight or a daytime transfer may be preferable to a rushed drive.
Airport Arrival Tips
Pre-arrange your airport pickup with your accommodation, because the FCDO advises using pre-arranged taxis rather than hailing cars. Carry your passport, visa approval and yellow fever certificate in your hand luggage. Do not photograph the airport, since the FCDO says photographing airports, ports, military sites and government buildings is illegal. Keep some cash in euros or US dollars, which World Travel Guide notes are widely accepted.
