These Brazil itineraries are planning outlines, not bookable tours. Brazil is huge, and the Rio Times says multi-region trips need flights booked in advance because distances are large and fares rise around holidays. We did not find official travel times between regions, so check flight times when you book. Each plan below limits the number of regions so you spend more time at each stop.

Before You Plan

  • Entry: Check whether you need a visa or e-visa. See the Brazil visa guide.
  • Flights: Plan domestic flights between regions. See flights to Brazil.
  • Season: Match your regions to the weather. See best time to visit Brazil.
  • Safety: The US State Department rates Brazil at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution.

5 Days: Rio de Janeiro

Five days is enough for Rio and its surroundings if you stay in one place.

  • Day 1: Arrive, rest and walk a short, busy stretch near your hotel in daylight.
  • Day 2: Visit Christ the Redeemer. The UK reports armed robberies on the Corcovado walking trail, so take an organised transport option and ask your hotel which route is safest.
  • Day 3: Spend a day on the beaches at Copacabana or Ipanema, taking only what you need and keeping valuables out of sight.
  • Day 4: Explore a UNESCO-listed Carioca landscape or a museum, depending on the weather.
  • Day 5: Leave a buffer for your departure.

7 Days: Rio and Iguacu Falls

A week lets you pair Rio with Iguacu Falls.

  • Days 1 to 3: Rio, as above.
  • Day 4: Fly to Foz do Iguacu, using a domestic flight booked in advance.
  • Day 5: Visit Iguacu National Park, a UNESCO site since 1986. The Rio Times says May to September is the most comfortable time, while the flow is fullest after the December to March rains.
  • Days 6 and 7: Rest, or visit the Argentine side if your entry rules allow, and fly home with a buffer.

10 Days: Add Salvador or the Pantanal

Ten days gives you time for a third region.

  • Option A, Salvador: Add the Historic Centre of Salvador de Bahia, inscribed in 1985, and the Pelourinho district. The UK advises using taxis after dark in the north-east and warns about theft from hotel rooms.
  • Option B, the Pantanal: Add a wildlife stay in the dry season from May to October, with July to September the peak. Mornings can drop to 5 to 10Β°C in June and July.

We do not recommend adding the Amazon to a short plan. The UK advises against all but essential travel on several river routes in Amazonas State, so plan that trip separately with an operator that can explain its route.

Planning Around Carnival

Carnival 2027 in Rio is listed for 5 to 10 February, with Sambadrome parades on 7, 8 and 9 February. Hotel rates in Rio can double or triple, often with minimum stays of four nights or more, according to the Rio Times. Book early and keep your dates flexible if you can.

Practical Tips

These habits apply to every itinerary above, and they matter most in the first days, when you are still getting used to a new city.

  • Carry only the cash and cards you need for the day.
  • Use licensed taxis or ride services at night.
  • Keep your phone out of sight on busy streets.
  • Check airline baggage rules for domestic flights.
  • Confirm your travel insurance covers your activities.

Official Safety Advice

The US State Department warns of violent crime, drink-spiking robberies in Rio and kidnapping risks, and tells travellers to avoid favelas. The UK lists theft hotspots in Rio, Sao Paulo and Brasilia. See the Brazil travel guide.

Pacing and Transfers

Treat each internal flight as a half-day, because airport transfers, check-in and security take time and fares rise around holidays. Keep your base for at least two nights where you can, so you spend more of the trip on the ground. Put the most remote stop, such as the Pantanal, when you are rested, and keep the last day free for your departure. We did not find official flight times between regions, so check them on the airline site when you book.

Matching Your Route to the Season

Rio is milder in April to June and September to November, and Iguacu Falls is most comfortable from May to September. The Pantanal is best for wildlife from July to September, though July school holidays are busy. If you travel from December to March, expect heat, rain and crowds, especially around Carnival.
