Brazil is too big to see in one trip, so the first decision is which regions to combine. Distances are large, and most multi-region trips use domestic flights. This guide groups the main destinations by region, explains what each is known for and notes the official safety advice that affects each one. Brazil has 25 UNESCO World Heritage Sites, according to Wikipedia, and many of the places below are among them.
How to Choose
Pick one or two regions for a first trip. Rio de Janeiro and Iguacu Falls are the usual pairing, and Salvador adds the north-east coast. Nature trips to the Pantanal or the Amazon need their own time and planning. The Rio Times says there is no single best month for the whole country, so match the region to your travel dates using our best time to visit Brazil guide.
Rio de Janeiro
Rio is known for Christ the Redeemer, Copacabana and Ipanema. UNESCO inscribed Rio de Janeiro: Carioca Landscapes Between the Mountain and the Sea in 2012. The UK Foreign Office says pickpocketing and theft are most common around Copacabana, Ipanema, Lapa and Santa Teresa, and that armed robberies have been reported on the Corcovado walking trail to Christ the Redeemer. The US State Department highlights drink-spiking robberies in Rio. Rio’s 2027 Carnival is listed for 5 to 10 February by the Rio Times.
Sao Paulo
Sao Paulo is Brazil’s largest city. The UK lists theft hotspots around Avenida Paulista, the historic downtown, Rua Augusta, Se Cathedral, Praca da Republica, the Estacao da Luz metro area and Pinheiros, so keep valuables out of sight in busy areas.
Brasilia
Brasilia, the capital, was inaugurated in 1960 and is a UNESCO site, inscribed in 1987. The UK says the central bus station has many theft incidents, and the US State Department advises avoiding the city’s satellite cities at night.
Iguacu Falls
Iguacu National Park was inscribed by UNESCO in 1986 and sits on the border with Argentina. The Rio Times says May to September is the most comfortable time, while the flow is fullest after the December to March rains, when heat and crowds peak. The US State Department exempts Foz do Iguacu from its border-area warning.
Salvador and the North-East
The Historic Centre of Salvador de Bahia was inscribed in 1985, and the Pelourinho district is its best-known quarter. Olinda (1982) and Sao Luis (1997) are other historic towns on the UNESCO list. The Rio Times describes the north-east as warm all year, driest from September to March, with a short rainy spell in June and July. The UK says theft from hotel rooms and muggings are the most common incidents in the north-east and advises using taxis after dark.
Lencois Maranhenses
Lencois Maranhenses National Park was inscribed by UNESCO in 2024. It is a remote destination, so plan transport and a local operator in advance.
The Pantanal
The Pantanal Conservation Area was inscribed in 2000. The Rio Times says the dry season runs from May to October, with July to September the peak for wildlife viewing, while flooding runs from about November to April. The article gives inconsistent peak timing, with one section saying July to September and another August to September. June and July mornings can drop to 5 to 10ยฐC.
The Amazon
The Central Amazon Conservation Complex was inscribed in 2000. The Rio Times says it rains every month, with high water from January to June and low water from roughly July to December around Manaus. The UK Foreign Office advises against all but essential travel on several river routes in Amazonas State, including parts of the Amazon River and its tributaries, the Itaquai and Japura rivers, and the Rio Negro north or west of Barcelos. Book only with an operator that can tell you which routes it uses.
Historic and Coastal Sites
- Ouro Preto: UNESCO-listed in 1980.
- Paraty and Ilha Grande: A mixed cultural and natural site inscribed in 2019.
- Fernando de Noronha: An Atlantic islands reserve inscribed in 2001.
- Chapada dos Veadeiros and Emas: Cerrado protected areas inscribed in 2001.
The South
The Rio Times says Florianopolis is best for beaches from October to April, and Rio Grande do Sul and wine country have four seasons, with winter frost from June to August.
