Whether you need a Bahamas visa depends on your passport. Citizens of the United States, Canada and the United Kingdom don’t need one for a tourist stay, and neither do most Commonwealth citizens and many Latin American passport holders. Everyone needs a passport, a return or onward ticket and enough funds for the trip. Check your own nationality on the official Bahamas Department of Immigration pages before you book.
Quick answer: Carry a passport valid for at least six months after your departure date, plus a return or onward ticket. Visitors from visa-exempt countries get a stay set by the immigration officer, with a maximum of eight months. Everyone else must apply for a visa before flying. Tourists can’t work.
Do you need a visa to visit the Bahamas?
The Department of Immigration says all visitors need a Bahamian visa except the groups below. Its summary isn’t a full list of every nationality, so confirm yours on the department’s Before Your Arrival page.
- United States and Canadian citizens.
- United Kingdom citizens.
- Citizens of most Commonwealth countries, except Pakistan, Cameroon, Mozambique, India, Nigeria and Ghana.
- Citizens of many Latin American countries, including Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Colombia and Mexico, for stays of up to three months.
- US permanent residents and Canadian landed immigrants who hold other passports, usually for up to 30 days. Check the exact documents.
Visa-free entry isn’t a guarantee. Immigration officers decide at the border, and airlines can refuse boarding if your documents are incomplete.
Which group are you in?
| Your situation | What to do |
|---|---|
| US, Canadian or UK citizen | No visa for tourism. Carry your passport and onward ticket |
| Commonwealth or Latin American passport on the exempt list | Confirm your country on the official list, then carry the usual documents |
| Passport from Pakistan, Cameroon, Mozambique, India, Nigeria or Ghana | A visa is required. Apply before you travel |
| Any other nationality | Check the Before Your Arrival page. If a visa is listed, apply through a Bahamian embassy, high commission or consulate |
| Only changing planes in Nassau | Confirm transit rules with your airline before you book |
The Bahamian government sets visa fees and processing times. Ask the embassy or consulate that handles your application for the current figures.
What documents should you carry?
Keep these in your hand luggage, not your checked bag.
- A passport valid for at least six months after the date you plan to leave. The UK government’s entry guidance gives the same rule.
- A return or onward ticket.
- Proof you can support yourself, such as a card or bank statement, because officers may ask.
- Your visa approval, if your nationality needs one.
- The address of your first hotel or rental.
Children travelling without both parents may need extra documents. Read the immigration department’s guidelines for minors travelling to the Bahamas before you fly.
What happens at the border?
Visitors fill in an immigration form on arrival and make a baggage declaration at customs. You must declare anything that may be prohibited or taxable, and the Bahamas Customs guidance for arriving visitors explains the rules. Firearms and ammunition are illegal, including small quantities left in a carry-on or checked bag, so check your luggage before you pack.
If you fly through the United States on the way to Nassau, the US has its own rules for non-US passport holders, such as ESTA or a transit visa. Our flights to the Bahamas guide covers this step.
How long can you stay?
The immigration officer at your port of entry decides how long you can stay, and the limit is written in your passport. The Department of Immigration gives a maximum of eight months for visitors who can support themselves. The UK government says British citizens can usually stay up to 30 days without a visa, then ask for an extension of up to eight months. Because these figures vary by nationality and officer, treat your entry stamp as the final answer.
To stay longer, apply to the Department of Immigration before your permitted stay ends, using its extension of stay page. Overstaying can lead to a fine, detention and deportation. Visitors aren’t allowed to take paid work.
Do health rules affect entry?
Travellers arriving from a country with a risk of yellow fever transmission need a yellow fever vaccination certificate. The Bahamian government has also issued an Ebola travel advisory after the World Health Organization declared an international health emergency in May 2026. It introduces health screening, and possible quarantine or isolation, for travellers who’ve been in affected regions within 30 days before arrival. If that could apply to you, read the notice before you book.
Common mistakes to avoid
- Assuming a friend’s visa-free rule applies to your passport.
- Booking a flight before checking whether you need a visa.
- Arriving with a passport that expires within six months of your departure date.
- Carrying no proof of onward travel.
- Forgetting the US transit rules on a connecting flight.
- Packing anything that could count as a firearm or ammunition.
Safety notes for visitors
The US State Department lists the Bahamas at Level 2, exercise increased caution, in an advisory renewed on 28 July 2026. It cites violent crime, most of it in Nassau and Freeport, and warns that recreational boating and jet ski operators aren’t well regulated. Read the US advisory and the UK FCDO travel advice before you travel. As of our last check, neither tells visitors to avoid any island. Travel insurance is a sensible choice, especially in hurricane season.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can I get a visa on arrival in the Bahamas?
Don’t count on it. If your nationality needs a visa, arrange it before you fly, because airlines may refuse boarding without it. Confirm the process with the nearest Bahamian embassy, high commission or consulate.
Do children need their own passports?
Yes. Every traveller, including babies, needs their own valid travel document. If a child travels without both parents, check the immigration department’s guidelines for minors first.
Is a cruise stop different from a flight?
The same entry rules apply to cruise passengers who leave the ship, but your cruise line handles much of the paperwork. Ask the line what it needs, and make sure your passport covers the whole trip.
What if my passport is lost on the island?
Report it to the local police and contact your embassy or consulate. If your country has no mission in Nassau, ask the nearest one how to get an emergency travel document.
