The best places to visit in the Bahamas depend on what you want. Nassau and Paradise Island suit first-timers and families, Exuma suits boat trips and clear water, and Eleuthera, Harbour Island and Abaco suit quieter beach stays. Most trips cover two or three islands, not more.
How do you choose where to go?
The Bahamas has about 700 islands and cays, but most of them are tiny or empty. Travel between islands usually means a small plane or a ferry, so every extra island costs time. Pick one main base and add one or two others.
- Choose Nassau and Paradise Island if you want resorts, restaurants, history and easy flights.
- Choose Exuma if you want boat days and swimming spots.
- Choose Eleuthera and Harbour Island if beaches and a slow pace matter most.
- Choose Abaco if you like sailing and small island towns.
- Choose Andros if you like fishing, diving and quiet nature.
Best places for beaches
Harbour Island, near Eleuthera
Harbour Island is known for its pink-tinted sand and its small, painted town of Dunmore Town. You’ll reach it by a short boat ride from North Eleuthera, and golf carts are the normal way to get around. Plan two or three nights.
Cable Beach and Paradise Island, Nassau
These are the easiest beaches for first-timers, with big resorts and plenty of places to eat. They’re also the busiest, especially on cruise days. Go early for quieter sand.
Grand Bahama
Lucaya and the quiet beaches beyond Freeport suit travellers who want a short flight from Florida. Spend two to four nights, and use licensed tour operators for any boat or water sports.
Best places for islands and boat days
Exuma
Exuma is a long chain of cays with very clear, shallow water. The swimming pigs near Big Major Cay are one of the Bahamas’ best-known sights. Many people base themselves in or near George Town on Great Exuma and book a boat tour. Plan at least three nights, because bad weather can cancel boat trips.
Abaco
The Abacos are good for sailing, snorkelling and relaxed settlements. The striped lighthouse at Hope Town on Elbow Cay is one of the most photographed spots in the country. Plan three to four nights.
Best places for culture and history
Nassau
Nassau is the best place to learn about Bahamian history. Look for Fort Charlotte, the Queen’s Staircase and the colonial buildings around downtown. If you can, visit when Junkanoo is on, on 26 December or 1 January. Give the city one to two full days.
For local food, try the casual seafood stalls around Arawak Cay. Go in a group or with a local guide in the evening, and follow the safety advice in the Bahamas travel guide.
Best places for nature and diving
Andros
Andros is the largest island and has a very low population. It’s known for blue holes, bonefishing and diving along its barrier reef. Facilities are basic, so book accommodation and transport early. Plan three or more nights if you want to fish or dive.
Bimini and Cat Island
Bimini is close to Florida and popular for fishing. Cat Island is quieter and has long, empty beaches. Both need more planning and a flexible schedule.
How long should you spend in each place?
| Place | Suggested time | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Nassau and Paradise Island | 2 to 4 nights | Resorts, history, food |
| Grand Bahama | 2 to 4 nights | Beaches, easy Florida access |
| Exuma | 3 to 5 nights | Boat trips, clear water |
| Eleuthera and Harbour Island | 3 to 5 nights | Beaches, relaxed pace |
| Abaco | 3 to 4 nights | Sailing, island towns |
| Andros | 3 or more nights | Fishing, diving, nature |
Common mistakes
- Trying to visit four or five islands in a week.
- Booking boat trips on the first day of a short stay, when bad weather can cancel them.
- Choosing an Out Island in hurricane season without a flexible plan. Some smaller resorts close in the quietest months.
- Using unlicensed jet ski or boat operators. The US and UK governments both warn that the water sports industry is poorly regulated.
Quick planning checklist
- Pick your main island first, then add one or two others.
- Check the flight schedule between islands, because many connect through Nassau.
- Book popular tours and rooms early for December to April.
- Read the official Bahamas tourism site for island-by-island details.
Frequently Asked Questions
Which island has the best beaches?
Harbour Island is famous for pink sand, and Cable Beach and Paradise Island are the easiest to reach. Quieter beaches on Eleuthera, Exuma and Cat Island suit travellers who don’t mind longer transfers.
Can you visit the swimming pigs on a day trip from Nassau?
Some tours run from Nassau, but the pigs are in the Exuma Cays, so it’s a long day. Staying in Exuma gives you more time and a better chance of good weather.
Are the Out Islands safe?
The UK FCDO says the Family or Out Islands have lower crime rates than Nassau. Basic care still applies, such as locking your rental and using licensed boat operators.
Is there anything to do besides beaches?
Yes. You can snorkel, dive, fish, sail, visit forts and museums in Nassau, eat conch at local restaurants and see cultural events like Junkanoo and regattas.
