Azerbaijan Itineraries: 3, 5 and 7 Days

Plan 3, 5 or 7 days in Azerbaijan with realistic driving times from Baku, route ideas for Gobustan, Quba, Khinalug and Sheki, and tips on getting around.

Three days is enough for Baku, the Absheron Peninsula and Gobustan. Five days adds a mountain trip to Quba and Khinalug, and seven days lets you reach Sheki without rushing. Most routes start in Baku, and the roads between regions are slower than the distances suggest.

Safety note: none of these plans include the south-western districts, the Armenia border area or Nakhchivan, which the US and UK advisories flag. Read the US advisory and the UK travel advice before you plan, and check them again before you leave.

Realistic Travel Times From Baku

DestinationDistanceBy car
GobustanAbout 64 kmAbout 1 hour
QubaAbout 170 kmAsk your driver for a current estimate
GabalaAbout 212 kmAbout 2 hours 45 minutes
ShekiA long driveAbout 4 to 5 hours

These are typical figures from route planners and local travel guides. Winter snow, road works and slow traffic can add time, and the UK government warns that road closures and diversions are often unmarked.

3-Day Itinerary: Baku and Gobustan

Day 1: Walled City and Waterfront

  • Explore the Walled City, a UNESCO site, and its lanes and viewpoints.
  • Walk the waterfront boulevard in the afternoon.
  • Try plov or qutab for dinner.

Day 2: Absheron Peninsula

  • Visit the Ateshgah fire temple.
  • See Yanar Dag, the burning hillside.
  • Stop at the Heydar Aliyev Center in the city.

Day 3: Gobustan

  • Leave early for the rock art landscape, about an hour from Baku.
  • Add the nearby mud volcanoes if your driver includes them.
  • Return to Baku for your onward flight.

5-Day Itinerary: Add the Mountains

Follow the three days above, then add the north.

Day 4: Quba and Khinalug

Leave Baku early for Quba, about 170 km north. The road to Khinalug climbs to about 2,000 metres, and the village is a UNESCO cultural landscape. A published tour route puts the drive back to Baku at about 310 km from Khinalug. Check the weather and road conditions before you go.

Day 5: Rest or Gabala

Use the last day to rest in Baku, or take a long day trip to Gabala, about 2 hours 45 minutes each way. Don’t schedule a flight the same evening.

7-Day Itinerary: Add Sheki

With a week, you can make a loop through the north and return to Baku.

  • Days 1 to 3: Baku, Absheron and Gobustan, as above.
  • Day 4: Quba and Khinalug, with an overnight stay in Quba.
  • Day 5: drive onward to Sheki. Ask your driver for a realistic estimate, since this is a long day.
  • Day 6: Sheki’s Khan’s Palace, old town and the Church of Kish. Try piti and Sheki halva.
  • Day 7: return toward Baku, with a stop in Gabala if time allows.

A published six-day tour uses a similar route, running from Baku to Absheron, Gobustan, Khinalug, Lahij, Sheki, Kish and Shamakhi before returning to Baku.

Getting Around

  • Private driver or tour: the easiest way to cover long distances, and often the most practical for Gobustan and Khinalug.
  • Taxis and ride-hailing: Uber and Bolt are widely available, according to the UK government. Agree the fare first or make sure the meter is on.
  • Self-drive: the UK government says driving standards are erratic and right-hand-drive cars are illegal. You’ll need an international driving permit and your licence.
  • Buses and trains: they run to some regions, but a published guide says they take about seven hours to Sheki, much slower than driving.

Decision Guide

  • Choose 3 days if you want the main city sights and one day trip.
  • Choose 5 days if you want a mountain village without long overland days.
  • Choose 7 days if Sheki matters to you, and you’re comfortable with long drives.

Common Mistakes

  • Planning Sheki as a day trip from Baku.
  • Leaving no buffer before a flight.
  • Choosing roads or sites in areas flagged by the advisories.

Quick Checklist

  • Print your e-visa and carry your passport at all times.
  • Confirm opening times for sites and museums.
  • Save offline maps and your hotel address in Azerbaijani script if possible.
  • Check the forecast for mountain days.

Azerbaijan Itinerary FAQs

How many days do you need in Azerbaijan?

Three days covers Baku and Gobustan. Five to seven days is better if you want mountain villages or Sheki. Add a buffer day if you travel in winter.

Can I visit Sheki in one day from Baku?

It’s not realistic. The drive is about four to five hours each way, so a night in Sheki is much better.

Do I need a car in Azerbaijan?

No. Taxis, drivers and tours work well for most visitors, and self-driving brings extra legal and safety concerns.

Can I do Khinalug in a day trip?

Some travellers do it, but it’s a long day on mountain roads. Staying in Quba gives you a more relaxed start.
