Best Places to Visit in Azerbaijan

The best places to visit in Azerbaijan by type: Baku’s Old City, Gobustan rock art, Khinalug, Sheki and the mountains, with travel times.

Last updated:

Last checked: October 2026

The best places to visit in Azerbaijan are Baku’s Walled City, the Gobustan rock art landscape, the mountain village of Khinalug and the old town of Sheki. All four are UNESCO World Heritage sites. Baku works as a base for day trips, while Quba, Gabala and Sheki suit slower, mountain-focused stays.

Safety note: every place below lies outside the regions named in the US and UK advisories, but the situation can change. Read the US advisory and the UK regional risks page first. Both warn against travel to areas affected by landmines in the south-west, including Khankendi, Shusha, Lachin, Kalbajar and Aghdam.

History and Culture

Baku’s Walled City (Icherisheher)

UNESCO listed the Walled City of Baku with the Shirvanshah’s Palace and Maiden Tower in 2000. Azerbaijan’s tourism sources describe it as the historic core of the capital, surrounded by 12th-century defensive walls. Plan a half day to wander the lanes, then walk out to the waterfront boulevard. Check the official museum pages for tickets and opening hours.

Absheron Peninsula: Ateshgah and Yanar Dag

Azerbaijan’s official tourism itinerary pairs the Ateshgah fire temple with Yanar Dag, a hillside that burns with natural gas flames, and the Heydar Aliyev Center in the capital. They make an easy half day with a driver.

Sheki

The Historic Centre of Sheki with the Khan’s Palace joined the World Heritage List in 2019. The palace dates from the 18th century and is known for shebeke windows, which are assembled from coloured glass without nails or glue. Sheki is also famous for piti stew and a very sweet halva. Nearby is the Church of Kish. Give Sheki at least two days if you’re travelling from Baku.

Ancient Landscapes and Villages

Gobustan Rock Art Cultural Landscape

UNESCO listed Gobustan in 2007. Local tourism sources say it holds more than 6,000 rock engravings, some very old, in a semi-desert area about an hour’s drive from Baku. Mud volcanoes are usually visited in the same area. Public transport isn’t simple, because route planners show no direct connection, so most visitors use a taxi or a guide.

Khinalug and the Quba Region

The Khinalig cultural landscape and Köç Yolu transhumance route was listed in 2023. The village sits at about 2,000 metres in the Quba region, and the road climbs through a mountain pass. Weather changes quickly, so check the forecast and road conditions before you go.

Gabala and the Greater Caucasus

Gabala has forests and mountain scenery and is usually seen as a cooler escape from the heat of Baku. Ski areas such as Shahdag and Tufandag operate in winter, and summer visitors use the same areas for walking. Check each resort’s official site for dates.

Places to Treat With Caution

  • South-western districts: the US State Department says not to travel to Aghdam, Aghdara, Fuzuli, Gubadli, Jabrayil, Kalbajar, Khankendi, Khojali, Khojavend, Lachin, Shusha and Zangilan because of landmines.
  • Armenia border area: the UK government advises against all travel within 5 km of the border.
  • Nakhchivan: a drone strike hit its airport on 5 March 2026, according to the US State Department. Check current advice before considering it.
  • Hyrcanian Forests: the Azerbaijani part of this UNESCO site lies in the south-east, near the Iran border, which the US advisory flags as high risk. Don’t plan a visit without checking current guidance.

Decision Guide

  • Choose Baku and Gobustan if you have three days or less.
  • Choose Quba and Khinalug if you want mountain scenery and can handle winding roads.
  • Choose Sheki if old architecture and crafts matter most.
  • Choose to skip the south-west and borders entirely unless official advice changes.

Common Mistakes

  • Trying to see Baku, Gobustan and Sheki in a single day.
  • Using unofficial maps that include places in the warning list.
  • Photographing military sites or memorials without permission. The UK government warns that visitors have been detained for this.

Quick Checklist

  • Check opening hours and ticket details on official pages.
  • Carry your passport, since police sometimes check ID.
  • Pack for wind in Baku and cooler air in the mountains.

Best Places in Azerbaijan FAQs

Can I visit Karabakh as a tourist?

Not safely, according to the advisories. The US says not to travel to most districts there because of landmines, and the UK warns that people who visit parts of the south-west without permission could be denied entry to Azerbaijan.

Is Baku worth visiting on its own?

Yes. The Walled City, waterfront and modern landmarks can fill two or three days. Add Gobustan if you want a half-day trip.

How do I get to Gobustan without a car?

Route planners show no direct service. A mix of taxi and bus takes about an hour and 20 minutes, so a taxi or driver is simpler.

Which places are UNESCO sites?

Baku’s Walled City, Gobustan, Sheki’s centre, the Khinalig landscape and the Hyrcanian Forests. Years are listed in our Azerbaijan travel guide.

Most of these places are far apart, so check the getting around Azerbaijan guide for realistic journey times by road and rail.
