Safety note: official advisories cover areas near the Azerbaijan border. Read the Armenia safety notice, the UK advice and the US advisory before you fix any route.
How many days do you need in Armenia?
For a first trip, five to seven days works well. Base yourself in Yerevan for the nearby sights, then add Lake Sevan, Dilijan and the southern wine route. Three days covers the capital and one or two day trips. Ten days adds Gyumri, the north and Tatev without rushing.
Armenia is small, but the roads are winding and the best sights are spread out. The thing is, distance on the map says little about time in the car, so plan around the drive times below.
How far are the main sights from Yerevan?
| Destination | Road distance (approx.) | Typical drive time |
|---|---|---|
| Echmiadzin | 18 km | About 30 minutes |
| Garni | 30 km | 30 to 45 minutes |
| Geghard | 37 km | About 15 minutes beyond Garni |
| Khor Virap | 43 km | About 45 minutes |
| Lake Sevan | 64 km | 1 to 1 hour 15 minutes |
| Dilijan | 95 km | About 1.5 hours |
| Gyumri | 121 km | About 2 hours |
| Noravank | 122 km | About 2 hours |
| Tatev | 253 to 256 km | 4.5 to 5 hours |
Distances come from a car-rental guide, and times come from several travel planners. Treat them as estimates, because traffic and stops change them.

On the southern leg, the US advisory restricts embassy staff from Syunik east of Goris and south of Kapan. Check the advisory map and keep your plans inside the areas you are comfortable with.
How do you get around Armenia?
- Marshrutkas: shared minibuses on fixed routes. They are cheap and run to most towns, but timetables can be loose.
- Taxis and hired drivers: popular for day trips. The US State Department warns that unmetered informal taxis can be difficult and advises agreeing the price in advance.
- Group tours: practical for Tatev, Noravank and other long days.
- Self-drive: possible, but the State Department says road conditions can be poor outside main highways and advises against driving at night.
Tips for a smoother trip
- Leave early. Roads and parking are easier before late morning.
- Do not add more than two major sights to one day.
- Check ticket details on official pages before you go. Cable car and site hours change by season.
- Keep your passport copy with you. See our Armenia visa guide for entry rules.
Common mistakes
- Planning Tatev as a quick day trip from Yerevan.
- Packing Haghpat, Sanahin and Dilijan into one afternoon.
- Assuming the time shown on a map app will match real driving, especially on mountain roads.
- Starting a long drive late in the day. The State Department advises against driving at night.
Before You Go: itinerary checklist

- Check the weather for your month. Our month-by-month guide helps.

Armenia itinerary FAQs
Is one week enough for Armenia?
Yes, for a first visit. Seven days lets you see Yerevan, Garni, Geghard, Khor Virap, Areni, Lake Sevan and Dilijan, with a night in Gyumri if you want the north. Tatev usually needs an extra night, so it fits better in ten days.
Can you visit Armenia without a car?
Yes. Marshrutkas link Yerevan with most towns, and taxis or group tours cover monasteries that public transport reaches slowly. Self-drive gives more freedom, but road conditions can be poor outside main highways, so many visitors prefer a driver.
Should I stay in Yerevan for the whole trip?
You can, for a short trip. Garni, Geghard, Khor Virap and Lake Sevan are all day trips. For Dilijan, Gyumri and Tatev, one night away saves a long drive back and gives you more time at each place.
Which month is best for an Armenia itinerary?
Late May to June and September to October suit most itineraries. See the best time to visit Armenia guide for the month-by-month detail and festival dates that can affect hotel availability.
