Best area by trip type

  • First-time visitors: Dickenson Bay or Jolly Harbour. Both have restaurants, beaches and easy access.

  • Couples and romance: adults-only and couples-only all-inclusive resorts are common on the west and north coasts, and boutique inns suit English Harbour.
  • History and sailing fans: English Harbour or Falmouth Harbour, close to Nelson’s Dockyard.
  • Budget travellers: St. John’s guesthouses, or the more affordable resorts around Jolly Harbour.

  • Boutique and historic inns: clustered around English Harbour.
  • Villas and apartments: useful for families and groups, and for guests who want to cook.

Halal-friendly and family notes

We could not verify which properties label their food as halal, so ask before you book. Request halal meals in writing if you are booking an all-inclusive, or choose a villa or apartment with a kitchen. Travel guides note supermarkets in St. John’s and Jolly Harbour, which helps if you plan to self-cater. For families with young children, look for calm, shallow beaches and ask whether the property has family rooms or cots.

Booking tips

  • Book early for mid-December to mid-April, when demand and prices peak.
  • Rooms also fill around Carnival in late July and early August, and around Antigua Sailing Week in April.
  • Many resorts close for part of September, so confirm that your property is open.
  • Read the cancellation terms, especially during hurricane season.
  • We do not quote an accommodation tax, because we could not confirm an official figure. Check the final price, taxes and service charges on the booking page.
  • Ask whether the price includes airport transfers.

Choose your base

  • Choose Dickenson Bay if you want walkable restaurants and a short transfer.
  • Choose Jolly Harbour if you want a marina, a calmer coast and better value.
  • Choose English Harbour if you want history and boats and do not mind a longer transfer.
  • Choose the east if you want peace and have a rental car.

Common mistakes

  • Booking the south coast without a car and then expecting to beach-hop in the north.
  • Assuming all-inclusive means everything is included. Check the rules for drinks, activities and tours.
  • Forgetting that St. John’s is very quiet on Sundays.

Your base also shapes how you travel. Getting around Antigua explains taxis, buses and car rental, and the Antigua and Barbuda travel guide gives the wider background before you book.

FAQs

Can I stay in Barbuda?

Yes, but Barbuda has limited places to stay compared with Antigua and was badly damaged by hurricanes in 2017. Most visitors do a day trip from Antigua by ferry, which takes about 90 minutes each way.

Do hotels close in the off season?

Some do. Steppes Travel says many resorts close temporarily in September, the quietest month. Check that your property and nearby restaurants are open before you book.

Is it safe to walk around at night?

Use normal city caution. The UK FCDO notes that crime including armed robbery has occurred, and few streets are lit at night. Use taxis after dark, especially outside resort areas.
