The best places to visit in Antigua are Nelson’s Dockyard and English Harbour for history, Shirley Heights for views, Devil’s Bridge for dramatic coastline, Half Moon Bay and Dickenson Bay for beaches, and Barbuda’s Frigate Bird Sanctuary for wildlife. Most are within about an hour’s drive of each other.
Best places in Antigua for history
Nelson’s Dockyard and English Harbour
Nelson’s Dockyard sits in English Harbour on the south coast. UNESCO inscribed the Antigua Naval Dockyard and Related Archaeological Sites in 2016. The yard dates to 1725 and was later named after Horatio Nelson, who served in Antigua from 1784 to 1787. Its story also includes the enslaved people who worked there.
Allow two to three hours for the dockyard, the museum and a walk around the harbour. Read the UNESCO listing for the site’s heritage value, and check the national park’s official pages for current hours and fees.
Shirley Heights
Shirley Heights is an 18th-century British military lookout above English Harbour, with wide views over the water. It is best known for a Sunday evening party with live steel band music and a barbecue. Schedules and prices change, so confirm the current arrangements with the venue or your hotel. The nearby Dow’s Hill Interpretation Centre has exhibits on the island’s history.
Betty’s Hope, Fort James and St. John’s
Betty’s Hope is the site of a former sugar plantation in the east, and it is less than a 15-minute drive from Devil’s Bridge, so the two pair well. Fort James guards the north side of St. John’s harbour. In St. John’s itself, look for the cathedral, the Museum of Antigua and Barbuda and the market. The town is lively on weekdays and very quiet on Sundays.
Best places for nature and viewpoints
Devil’s Bridge National Park
On the rugged Atlantic coast near Indian Town Point, waves have carved a limestone arch that throws spray high into the air. Local accounts also link the site to a painful chapter of slavery-era history. Keep well back from the edge, because the sea here is powerful, and do not swim near the arch. Allow 30 to 60 minutes.
Fig Tree Drive and the southwest
Fig Tree Drive is a scenic road through the greener southwest and appears on most island tours. Pair it with a west-coast beach stop. Old Road in the south is known for fruit growing, and Cades Bay Pineapple Farm there is a place to taste the Antigua Black pineapple, according to CNN Travel.
Great Bird Island
Great Bird Island, off the north-east coast, is known for mangroves and birdlife and is reached by boat. Boat tours often combine it with swimming and snorkelling.
Barbuda and the Frigate Bird Sanctuary
Barbuda lies about 28 miles (45 km) from Antigua. The high-speed ferry from St. John’s takes around 90 minutes, according to Visit Antigua & Barbuda, and some visitors fly between the islands. The Frigate Bird Sanctuary in Codrington Lagoon National Park is described as home to the largest frigatebird colony in the Western Hemisphere. You can only visit with a licensed operator, usually by boat from Codrington.
Sources differ on the peak season. AAA lists November to April as the mating season, so ask operators what to expect on your dates. Barbuda was badly hit by hurricanes in 2017 and has limited places to stay, so most visitors come for the day.
Best beaches in Antigua
- Half Moon Bay (southeast): a crescent of sand protected by a reef. Bring a picnic and shade, and note that you need a car to get there. Weekdays are quieter than weekends, according to PlanetWare.
- Dickenson Bay (north): the most developed beach, with resorts, restaurants and watersports, close to the airport and St. John’s.
- Jolly Beach and Valley Church Beach (west): long west-coast beaches with sunset views, near Jolly Harbour.
- Ffryes and Darkwood (west): quieter, with fewer facilities. Pack water and snacks.
- Rendezvous Bay (south): a secluded beach reached on foot along a trail, so wear proper shoes.
Food and local life
Try fungee and pepperpot, the national dish, at a local restaurant, and look for ducana and goat water soup. The market in St. John’s is a good place to see local fruit and vegetables. The Antigua Donkey Sanctuary in the east is a quieter stop for families.

Passes and tickets
We have not found an official island-wide sightseeing pass, so we do not recommend one. Fees and opening hours for national parks and heritage sites change, so check the Visit Antigua & Barbuda website and the park’s own pages before you go.
Several of these stops sit on different coasts, so decide how you will move between them. Getting around Antigua compares taxis, buses, rental cars and the Barbuda ferry, and the Antigua and Barbuda travel guide covers the history behind the dockyard and the plantations.
FAQs
Is Half Moon Bay good for swimming?
A reef protects the bay, which makes it popular, but conditions on the Atlantic side can change with wind and swell. Check the sea with locals or lifeguards on the day, and keep children close to shore.
Can I visit the Frigate Bird Sanctuary without a tour?
No. The sanctuary can only be visited with a licensed operator, normally by boat from the jetty in Codrington. Book through your hotel, a tour company or the local tourism office, ideally a day ahead.
Is Barbuda better than Antigua for beaches?
They offer different things. Antigua has more facilities, restaurants and easy access. Barbuda has long, quiet beaches with pink-tinged sand but fewer services and a ferry or flight to reach it.
