Cambodia requires most visitors to hold a visa, and the process is simple if you plan it in advance. This guide explains the options we could confirm, which details come from the UK government and which come from Wikipedia, and where those sources differ. We did not find a full official list of visa-exempt nationalities, so check your own passport on the official Cambodian e-visa portal or with a Cambodian embassy before you book anything. Rules change, and entry conditions have been affected by the border situation with Thailand.
Visa Types at a Glance
- Tourist e-visa: Applied for online before you travel.
- Visa on arrival: Available at airports and land crossings, with a photo and payment in US dollars, according to the UK government.
- Visa exemption: Wikipedia says holders of ordinary passports from certain countries can enter without a visa for 14, 15, 30 or 60 days, but the extracted text did not list which countries.
The UK government says British visitors need a visa and that tourist visas are valid for 30 days from entry. Keep the departure form that is stamped on arrival, and contact immigration before you leave if you lose it.
E-Visa
The UK government says to apply at least four days before you travel, through the Royal Embassy of Cambodia in the UK website or the official e-visa app for iOS and Android, and to check the embassy for current fees and photo requirements. Wikipedia says citizens of any country can apply online for US$30 before arrival, for a single entry and a maximum tourist stay of 30 days. The same source says e-visa holders can enter at Phnom Penh and other airports, and at the land checkpoints at Bavet (from Vietnam) and Trapeang Kriel (from Laos), and that Cham Yeam and Poipet were temporarily closed to e-visa entry. Use only the official government portal, because look-alike sites charge extra fees.
Visa on Arrival
If you do not get an e-visa, the UK government says you can obtain a visa at airports or land border crossings, and that you need a photo and must pay in US dollars. Wikipedia lists the tourist visa on arrival at US$30 and the business version at US$35, with a maximum stay of 30 days and extensions possible. Bring crisp US dollars and a passport photo, and expect to queue at busy airports, so an e-visa saves time.
Passport and Onward Ticket
The UK government says your passport must be valid for at least six months from the day you arrive and must be undamaged and complete, and that damaged passports or passports with missing pages usually lead to refusal. Wikipedia adds that the passport needs at least one blank page, and that foreign visitors must hold a return or onward ticket. It also says day trips are not permitted, except when arriving and leaving through Phnom Penh International Airport. Check your passport expiry date well before you travel.
e-Arrival Card
The UK government says that since 1 September 2024, travellers arriving by air at Phnom Penh, Siem Reap or Sihanoukville must submit an e-Arrival Card within seven days before arrival, at no charge. Wikipedia gives the start date as January 2025 and says all visitors flying to Cambodia must submit the card. The two sources differ on the start date, so follow the UK page and submit the card for any flight arrival.
Extensions and Overstays
Tourist visas can be extended inside Cambodia, according to the UK government. Overstaying can bring fines with no upper limit, detention or deportation, and if you overstay by more than 30 days you must leave the country and pay the fine. Your passport must be valid for six months from the start date of any extension. Hotels and landlords register guests through the FPCS app, and failing to register may prevent a visa extension.
Health Entry Requirements
The UK government says you need a yellow fever vaccination certificate if you are arriving from a country listed as a transmission risk, and it points to TravelHealthPro for recommended vaccinations. Check the rules for every country on your route, not only Cambodia.
The Thailand Border
The UK Foreign Office says land crossings between Cambodia and Thailand remain suspended, and advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the Thailand land border. Do not plan an overland crossing, and check the latest advice before you book any trip that touches the border area. See the Cambodia travel guide for the full safety summary.
Where Sources Differ
- The e-Arrival Card start date is 1 September 2024 on the UK page and January 2025 on Wikipedia.
- The e-visa fee and visa on arrival fee of US$30 come from Wikipedia, while the UK page tells you to check the embassy for current fees.
- The UK page does not cover customs and money limits, so check them with the Cambodian embassy.
- We did not find an official list of visa-exempt countries.
