These Cambodia itineraries are planning outlines, not bookable tours. Cambodia is smaller than many of its neighbours, but the main sights are spread out, and land crossings with Thailand are suspended, so each plan below keeps to one country and uses short domestic flights between the main bases. We did not find official travel times between cities, so check flight and road times when you book. Each plan limits the number of stops so you spend more time at each one.
Before You Plan
- Entry: Check your visa and e-Arrival Card. See the Cambodia visa guide.
- Flights: Plan domestic legs. See flights to Cambodia.
- Season: Match your stops to the weather. See best time to visit Cambodia.
- Safety: The US State Department rates Cambodia at Level 2, Exercise Increased Caution, according to a report on the advisory.
5 Days: Siem Reap and Angkor
Five days is enough for Angkor if you stay in one place and start early.
- Day 1: Arrive, rest and walk a short stretch near your hotel in daylight. If you arrive by air, submit the e-Arrival Card before you fly.
- Day 2: Visit Angkor Wat early, ideally for sunrise in the dry season, and return to your hotel in the hottest part of the day.
- Day 3: Visit the Bayon and other temples in the Angkor complex, staying on marked paths because Siem Reap province is flagged for unexploded ordnance.
- Day 4: Visit Ta Prohm, known for tree roots growing over the ruins, and spend the afternoon at a museum or a market.
- Day 5: Leave a buffer for your departure.
7 Days: Siem Reap and Phnom Penh
A week lets you pair Angkor with the capital.
- Days 1 to 4: Siem Reap and Angkor, as above.
- Day 5: Fly to Phnom Penh. Air Cambodia already operates daily flights between the two cities, and Cambodia Airways reportedly added two daily rotations from 26 June 2026, according to a news report, so check current schedules.
- Day 6: Visit the Royal Palace and museums, and consider the Cambodian Memorial Sites, which UNESCO inscribed in 2025. Take care with phones and bags, because the US advisory flags street theft in the capital.
- Day 7: Rest, or visit a market, and fly home with a buffer. Techo International Airport is about 20 km from the city.
10 Days: Add the Coast or a Remote Temple Site
Ten days gives you time for a third area.
- Option A, Sihanoukville and the coast: Add beach time, diving or snorkelling in the dry season. Cambodia Airways reportedly started a daily Siem Reap to Sihanoukville service on 26 June 2026, which can link the coast to Angkor without returning to Phnom Penh.
- Option B, Koh Ker or Sambor Prei Kuk: Add a remote UNESCO temple site with a local operator, and check the current advice for the province first.
We do not recommend adding any border temples. The UK Foreign Office lists Preah Vihear, Ta Krabey and Tamone Thom among the closed border temples, and advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of the Thailand land border.
Combining Cambodia With Thailand
The UK says land crossings between Cambodia and Thailand remain suspended, so do not plan an overland route between them. If you want to visit both countries, plan separate flights and check airline and government advice for any transit country, because the UK also warns of airspace closures and delays linked to the Middle East.
Practical Tips
- Start sightseeing early, before the heat and the crowds.
- Carry only the cash and cards you need for the day.
- Use licensed taxis or ride services at night.
- Do not accept drinks from strangers, and do not resist a robbery.
- Stay on marked paths at temple sites and never touch unfamiliar metal objects.
- Confirm your travel insurance covers your activities and any evacuation.
Official Safety Advice
The US State Department, as reported, cites crime, civil unrest and unexploded ordnance, with Level 4 areas along the Thai border. The UK advises against all but essential travel within 20 km of that border. See the Cambodia travel guide.
Pacing and Transfers
Treat each internal flight as a half-day, because airport transfers, check-in and security take time. Techo International Airport is about 20 km from central Phnom Penh, so allow extra time for the road transfer. Keep your base for at least two nights where you can, put the early sunrise visit on a day when you have no flight, and keep the last day free for your departure. We did not find official travel times between cities, so check them when you book.
Matching Your Route to the Season
November to March is the peak season with the most reliable dry weather. May to June and October to November bring fewer crowds at Angkor, and the wet season from June to October brings short heavy downpours. See best time to visit Cambodia for the full season guide.
