Weather by region

The highlands around Gitega and the north are cooler than the Lake Tanganyika shore at Bujumbura. Waterfalls such as Karera look best when flow is high, from about January to May, but roads are muddier then. June to September is easier for hiking, according to a Karera guide. Remote and border areas are not covered here, because several governments advise against travel to them.

Festivals and holidays

  • Independence Day, 1 July: marks independence from Belgium in 1962 and falls in the dry season.
  • Other public holidays: 1 January, 5 February, 6 April, 1 May, 8 June, 15 August, 13 and 21 October, 1 November and 25 December.

Ramadan and Islamic holidays

About 10 percent of the population is Muslim, according to one trade-information source. Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha are public holidays, and their dates shift each year. Ramadan 2027 is expected to begin around 8 February, with Eid al-Fitr around 10 March, subject to moon sighting. Offices and some shops may close on those days, so plan transport and meals ahead.

Best months by trip type

  • Choose June to August for the driest roads and easier travel.
  • Choose December and January for a shorter dry window and a quieter trip.
  • Choose January to May if waterfalls at full flow matter more than dry roads.
  • Choose July if you want Independence Day.

What to pack

  • Layers, because the highlands can feel cool
  • A rain jacket from October to May
  • Sun protection and a hat
  • Sturdy shoes for dirt tracks and waterfalls
  • Insect repellent. Ask a travel health clinic about malaria prevention and vaccines, including yellow fever.
  • Cash in small notes, because most transactions are in cash

Common mistakes

  • Planning long road days in the wet season without extra time.
  • Assuming the dry season makes remote areas safe. Advisories apply all year.
  • Booking around Eid dates before they are confirmed.
