For a first trip to Bulgaria, 3 days covers Sofia and a day trip, 5 days adds Plovdiv, 7 days adds Veliko Tarnovo or the coast, and 10 days gives a loop through the main regions. Travel by road between cities is slow, so choose fewer stops and leave time for transport days.
How long do you need in Bulgaria?
Three days is enough for Sofia and one excursion. Five to seven days lets you add Plovdiv and a second region. Ten days works well if you want the mountains, a medieval town and the coast. Bulgaria is not huge, but mountain roads and slow trains make journeys longer than the map suggests.
How do you get around?
- Buses: reach most towns and are often the fastest public option between cities.
- Trains: link Sofia with Plovdiv, Varna and other cities. They’re cheap but slower than buses on some routes.
- Rental car: best for the mountains and countryside. Drive on the right, and check winter tyre rules before a cold-season trip.
- Flights: Sofia, Varna, Burgas and Plovdiv have airports. See our flights to Bulgaria guide.
3 days: Sofia and Rila Monastery
- Day 1: Sofia. Walk the centre, visit Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and take a cafรฉ break.
- Day 2: Day trip to Rila Monastery, which is about two hours from Sofia by road. Start early.
- Day 3: Boyana Church in the morning, then a short walk or ride on Vitosha before your departure.
5 days: Sofia and Plovdiv
- Days 1 and 2: Sofia, as above, with a slower pace.
- Day 3: Travel to Plovdiv by bus, train or car. The journey is roughly two hours, depending on the route.
- Day 4: Explore Plovdiv’s Roman theatre, the Old Town and Kapana.
- Day 5: Return to Sofia, or fly out of Plovdiv if your route allows.
7 days: add Veliko Tarnovo
- Days 1 to 3: Sofia and Rila Monastery.
- Day 4: Travel to Plovdiv and explore in the afternoon.
- Day 5: Second day in Plovdiv or a wine stop on the way.
- Day 6: Travel to Veliko Tarnovo. Expect a long day by road, so leave time for stops.
- Day 7: Tsarevets fortress, then return towards Sofia or continue to the coast.
10 days: mountains, medieval towns and the coast
- Days 1 to 3: Sofia and Rila Monastery.
- Days 4 and 5: Plovdiv.
- Day 6: Veliko Tarnovo.
- Days 7 to 9: Black Sea coast, using Varna, Nessebar or Sozopol as a base.
- Day 10: Fly home from Varna or Burgas.
Sofia to Varna is roughly 450 to 500 km, so use a flight, a long bus or a train rather than a quick transfer. Check schedules before you plan around a specific departure.
Ski or hiking variation
For winter, replace the coast with Bansko or Borovets for three to four days. In summer, replace it with hiking in the Rila or Pirin mountains. Check weather and trail conditions before you set out.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is 5 days enough for Bulgaria?
It’s enough for Sofia and Plovdiv with a monastery visit, if you keep transfers short. Add days if you want the coast or mountains.
Can I do Bulgaria without a car?
Yes, for the main cities. Buses and trains reach most places, but a car helps in mountains and villages.
Should I rent a car for the Black Sea coast?
It’s useful if you want small beaches and old towns, but summer parking can be difficult. Public buses link the main resorts.
Can I combine Bulgaria with Romania or Greece?
Yes, since all are connected by road and rail. Check border times and your Schengen days, and see our visa guide.
