Safety notice: The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advises against all but essential travel to the Chapare region of Cochabamba Department, including Villa Tunari and highway routes 4 and 24, because of gang-related violent crime. The US State Department rates Bolivia Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution and lists Chapare Province as Level 4: Do Not Travel. Protests, road blockades and fuel shortages have disrupted travel in 2026. Read both advisories in full and check them again before you travel. See the full Bolivia travel guide for more.

When is the best time to visit Bolivia?

The best time to visit Bolivia is the dry season, roughly May to October, when skies are clear and travel in the Andes is easiest. The wet season, roughly November to March, brings green landscapes, afternoon storms and the flooded Uyuni mirror effect, but also more road disruption. The right month depends on where you are going.

Bolivia sits across very different climates, from the cold Altiplano to the hot Amazon lowlands. The best month for Uyuni is not the best month for the jungle, so decide your priority first.

What is the weather like by region?

  • Altiplano (La Paz, Uyuni, Oruro, Lake Titicaca): clear and dry from May to October with very cold nights. Travel sources report Uyuni night temperatures well below freezing in the dry season.
  • Amazon and pampas (Rurrenabaque): hot all year, with average highs around 30 degrees Celsius according to one guide. The dry season is usually the most comfortable.
  • Valleys (Cochabamba, Sucre, Tarija): milder, with sunny weather for much of the year.

When is the best time for the Salar de Uyuni?

Travel sources suggest January to March for mirror reflections and June to October for the white salt crust and full access. Wet season conditions can close some roads and cancel small-airport flights, and BoA cancelled La Paz to Uyuni flights in August 2026 because of weather and runway conditions. Which festivals and holidays affect your trip?

  • Alasitas, La Paz, late January: a fair where people buy miniature versions of things they hope to own.
  • Carnival of Oruro, early February: a festival that the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) lists as intangible heritage. In 2027 most events fall in the six days before Ash Wednesday, around 4 to 10 February, according to National Geographic.
  • Semana Santa: Holy Week observances across the country, when many Bolivians travel.
  • Independence Day, 6 August: parades and events nationwide.

Dates change each year, so check local listings before you book. Hotels in La Paz and Oruro fill quickly during festivals, and our where to stay in Bolivia guide has booking tips.

Ramadan is expected to begin around 8 February 2027, overlapping with Carnival. Bolivia has a small Muslim population, and Ramadan does not affect transport or opening hours, but halal food is limited outside the biggest cities. Local school holidays typically bring a winter break in July and a long summer break from December, when buses and hotels fill with domestic travellers.

How does altitude change what you do?

La Paz sits at roughly 3,600 metres, and El Alto airport is around 4,070 metres, so many visitors feel altitude effects on arrival. The US Embassy says to prepare for altitude sickness in places such as El Alto, La Paz, Uyuni, PotosΓ and Oruro. A lower-to-higher route, or a night in a lower city before La Paz, helps many people adjust. Speak to a doctor before you travel.

What should you pack for Bolivia?

  • Layers for big temperature swings, including a warm hat and gloves for Uyuni and the Altiplano nights.
  • Sun protection, because UV is strong at altitude.
  • A rain jacket from November to March.
  • Lightweight clothes for the Amazon, plus insect repellent.
  • Any prescription medicines in original packaging, because the FCDO notes some medicines are in short supply.

Best months by trip type

  • Overall: May and October, when weather is generally stable.
  • Salt flats white crust: June to October.
  • Salt flats mirror effect: January to March.
  • Amazon and pampas: May to October.
  • Culture and festivals: late January and early February.
  • Hiking in the Andes: April to October.

Which season should you choose? A decision guide

  • Choose May or October if you want the least disruption and moderate crowds.
  • Choose June to August if you want clear skies and can handle cold nights and crowds.
  • Choose January to March if the mirror effect matters more than easy roads.
  • Choose November only if you are flexible, because rain starts to build.

Common mistakes

  • Booking Uyuni for the mirror effect in the dry season.
  • Packing for warm weather and underestimating the highland cold.
  • Scheduling tight domestic flights in the wet season.
  • Ignoring protest and fuel news when planning road travel in any season.

Before You Go: seasonal checklist

  • Pick your season by region, not for the whole country.
  • Match it to a plan in our Bolivia itineraries.
  • Book festival-week accommodation early.
  • Read the UK and US advisories again before departure.
  • Leave buffer days around long journeys and flights.

Best time to visit Bolivia FAQs

What is the best month to visit Bolivia?

Many guides name May as the best single month for clear skies and good visibility. October and the shoulder months also work well. Your choice should follow your route, because Uyuni, the Amazon and La Paz behave differently.

Can you visit Bolivia in the rainy season?

Yes, but with trade-offs. Rain brings green landscapes and the Uyuni mirror effect, but also road closures, muddy trails and more cancellations on small routes. Build in extra days and keep your plans flexible.

When is Carnival in Oruro?

In 2027, most events fall in the six days leading to Ash Wednesday, around 4 to 10 February, according to National Geographic. UNESCO inscribed the carnival in 2008. Book accommodation early and check the schedule closer to the date.

Is Bolivia very cold?

The highlands can be very cold at night, especially from June to August, when Uyuni nights drop below freezing. Days can be sunny and bright. The Amazon lowlands are hot all year, so pack for both.
