Safety notice: The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advises against all but essential travel to the Chapare region of Cochabamba Department, including Villa Tunari and highway routes 4 and 24, because of gang-related violent crime. The US State Department rates Bolivia Level 2: Exercise Increased Caution and lists Chapare Province as Level 4: Do Not Travel. Protests, road blockades and fuel shortages have disrupted travel in 2026. Read both advisories in full and check them again before you travel. See the full Bolivia travel guide for more.
What are the best places to visit in Bolivia?
The best places to visit in Bolivia are La Paz, Lake Titicaca and Isla del Sol, the Salar de Uyuni salt flats, the colonial cities of Sucre and Potosí, Tiwanaku, Samaipata and the Amazon gateway of Rurrenabaque. Most are high in the Andes, so plan your order carefully and allow time to adjust to the altitude.
Quick comparison: altitude and time needed
| Place | Altitude (approx.) | Time to allow |
|---|---|---|
| La Paz | About 3,600 m (lower in Zona Sur, higher in El Alto) | 2 to 3 days |
| Copacabana and Isla del Sol | Lake Titicaca, about 3,800 m | 2 days |
| Salar de Uyuni | About 3,650 m | 1 to 3 days on a tour |
| Potosí | About 4,100 m | 1 to 2 days |
| Sucre | Lower and milder than La Paz | 2 to 3 days |
| Oruro | About 3,700 m | 1 day, or Carnival week |
| Rurrenabaque | About 300 m | 3 to 4 days for tours |
Altitudes come from travel and heritage sources. Check local guidance and allow extra time if you are sensitive to altitude. For travel times between these places, see our guide to getting around Bolivia.
Which are the best culture and heritage sites?
Tiwanaku
Tiwanaku is a pre-Inca ceremonial and political centre near La Paz, inscribed by the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) in 2000. The culture reached its height between about 500 and 900 AD. It is usually visited as a day trip from La Paz.
Sucre
Sucre is the constitutional capital, while La Paz is the seat of government. Its colonial centre was inscribed by UNESCO in 1991. Many visitors use it as a calmer base after La Paz, and Spanish schools are popular here.
Potosí
Potosí was founded in 1545 after silver was found on Cerro Rico. At around 4,100 metres it is one of the highest cities in the world. UNESCO inscribed it in 1987 and placed it on the List of World Heritage in Danger in 2014, so check the UNESCO page for Bolivia for the current status. Mine tours are popular, and travel writers urge you to research operators and ethics before booking.
Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos and Samaipata
In the eastern lowlands, the Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos (inscribed 1990) are a group of mission towns from the 17th and 18th centuries. Fuerte de Samaipata (1998) is a pre-Hispanic site with a large carved rock above the town.
Which cities and cultural spots are worth your time?
La Paz has the Witches’ Market, Plaza San Francisco and a cable-car network that doubles as sightseeing. Oruro hosts the Carnival of Oruro, which UNESCO inscribed on its intangible heritage list in 2008. The 2027 festivities fall in early February, with most events in the six days leading to Ash Wednesday, according to National Geographic.
Santa Cruz is Bolivia’s lowland hub and a useful arrival point for Samaipata and the eastern missions.
Which places are best for nature?
The Salar de Uyuni is the most famous. Tours run from one to three days, and many operators also run a three-day crossing towards San Pedro de Atacama in Chile. Travel sources say the flooded mirror effect appears in the wet season, roughly January to March, while June to October gives full access across the white salt crust. Our best time to visit Bolivia guide explains the seasons in detail.
Lake Titicaca and Isla del Sol are reached from Copacabana. Rurrenabaque and Madidi National Park offer jungle and pampas tours, and the dry season from May to October is usually easiest. Sajama National Park, with hot springs and volcanoes, is a quieter option for people comfortable at altitude. Noel Kempff Mercado National Park is UNESCO-listed (2000) but remote.
Which places should you choose? A decision guide
- Choose La Paz and Tiwanaku if you want culture and city life.
- Choose Lake Titicaca if you want an easier first stop at altitude.
- Choose Uyuni if landscapes matter most, and pick the season for white salt or mirror effect.
- Choose Sucre if you want colonial streets and a gentler pace.
- Choose Rurrenabaque if wildlife and warm weather are a priority.
- Choose Santa Cruz and Samaipata if you prefer lower altitudes and warm weather.
Tickets and passes
Prices and opening hours for tours, parks and sites change often. Check each operator’s or site’s official page before you book. Use a registered tour operator for Uyuni and Amazon trips, and agree the route and inclusions in writing.
Common mistakes
- Flying straight into La Paz and doing a strenuous plan on day one.
- Booking a rigid itinerary without allowing for blockades or flight cancellations.
- Choosing a tour for the wrong season, such as booking a mirror-effect photo trip in the dry season.
- Ignoring official warnings for Chapare when planning road routes.
Best places in Bolivia FAQs
What are the UNESCO World Heritage Sites in Bolivia?
Bolivia has seven: Potosí, the Jesuit Missions of the Chiquitos, Sucre, Fuerte de Samaipata, Noel Kempff Mercado National Park, Tiwanaku and the Qhapaq Ñan Andean Road System. The UNESCO page for Bolivia lists current details.
How many days do you need in Bolivia?
Seven days covers La Paz, Lake Titicaca and Uyuni. Ten days adds a slower pace, and two weeks allows Sucre, Potosí and the Amazon or Santa Cruz. See our Bolivia itineraries.
Is the Salar de Uyuni worth visiting?
Yes, for the scale of the landscape. Tours range from one to three days, and the season changes the look. Choose January to March for mirror reflections, or June to October for the white salt crust and easier access.
Is Potosí safe to visit?
Many visitors go, but read the official advisories and local news first. The US State Department warns that demonstrations can be unpredictable, and news reports say protests and blockades have affected several regions in 2026, including Potosí. Altitude is the other issue, at about 4,100 metres.
