How Do You Get Around Bahrain?
Getting around Bahrain is easiest by taxi, ride-hailing app or rental car. Public buses run by the Bahrain Public Transport Company cover the main routes and use a prepaid GO Card, but they may not reach every sight. There are no trains, trams, metros or domestic flights in service.
The islands are small, so most trips take well under an hour. Security conditions and road closures can change at short notice, so read the current safety advisories before you plan.
Is There a Train, Metro or Domestic Flight in Bahrain?
No. We found no passenger rail, no operating tram or metro and no domestic flights. A light-rail metro has been discussed for years, but it isn’t running, so check the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications at mtt.gov.bh if that changes. We also found no regular passenger ferry network linking the main islands. Road links carry almost all traffic.
How Do Buses Work in Bahrain?
The Bahrain Public Transport Company runs the red bus network under the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications. Its main terminals are in Manama, Muharraq and Isa Town, and routes link the governorates. Buses are air-conditioned, which helps in summer.
The GO Card is the standard way to pay. The ministry explains how to buy, top up and check a card on its bus fares and GO Card page. Sources disagree on whether drivers still accept cash, and fares change, so confirm both on that page before you ride. The Bahrain Bus app shows routes and live times.
- Bus stops can be a walk from the main sights, so check the last stretch on a map.
- Services thin out late in the evening, so plan a taxi for the return leg.
- Carry your passport or a copy, since checks can happen anywhere.
Are Taxis and Ride Apps Available?
Yes. Licensed taxis are metered, and you can hail one in busy areas or ask your hotel to call one. Ride-hailing apps also operate, and their prices depend on demand at the moment you book. We don’t list fares because they change. Check a live quote in the app or agree the method before you set off.
For short hops between sights, a taxi is usually the simplest option. For a half-day tour of several sights, many visitors hire a driver for the day. Agree the route, the waiting time and the total price in writing or in the app first.
Can You Rent a Car and Drive in Bahrain?
Yes. Bahrain drives on the right, and rental companies operate on the island. Licence rules for visitors depend on your nationality and the rental company, so confirm what you need with the company and the Ministry of Interior’s traffic authority before you book. We couldn’t confirm a single official rule that applies to everyone.
- Check that the insurance covers all drivers and any border crossing.
- Expect heavy traffic around Manama in the morning and early evening.
- Download an offline map, since signs mix Arabic and English.
- Don’t drive across the King Fahd Causeway without checking the entry rules for both countries. Our flights guide covers arrival by road.
How Long Do Journeys Take Between the Main Places?
These are rough drive times in light traffic. They are estimates, not official figures, so check a live map on the day.
| Route | Rough drive time | Best way |
|---|---|---|
| Manama to Muharraq | Under 30 minutes | Taxi, ride app or bus |
| Manama to Qal’at al-Bahrain | About 10 to 20 minutes | Taxi or ride app |
| Manama to the Dilmun Burial Mounds | About 20 to 30 minutes | Taxi, ride app or car |
| Manama to Sakhir | About 30 to 45 minutes | Car or taxi |
| Manama to the Tree of Life | About 40 to 55 minutes | Car or hired driver |

Which Option Should You Choose?
- Choose a taxi or ride app if you want the fastest and simplest option for short trips.
- Choose a rental car if you plan to see the Tree of Life, Sakhir and the burial mounds in one day.
- Choose the bus with a GO Card if you want the cheapest option and you’re comfortable with timetables.
- Choose a hired driver if you want the most relaxed day and don’t want to handle parking or navigation.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Relying on one bus route without checking the last departure.
- Getting into an unmarked car instead of a licensed taxi or a booked app ride.
- Visiting open-air sites in the middle of a summer day because the drive looks short.
- Assuming the timetable you saw last year still applies. Routes and times change.
Getting Around Checklist
- Choose a hotel base. The where to stay in Bahrain guide compares areas.
- Load a ride app and the Bahrain Bus app before you land.
- Buy a GO Card if you plan to use buses more than once.
- Save your hotel’s address in Arabic and English.
- Check your driving licence and rental insurance if you plan to drive.
Getting Around Bahrain FAQs
Do buses go to the main tourist sights?
Some do, but not all. The network is built around the main towns and terminals, so open-air sites and the desert stops are easier by taxi or car. Use the Bahrain Bus app to check each route before you leave.
Can I get around Bahrain without a car?
Yes. Most visitors use taxis and ride apps, and some add buses. A car mostly helps if you want to reach several far-apart sights in one day or travel at times when buses are limited.
Is there a metro in Bahrain?
Not yet. A metro has been planned, but there is no operating metro or tram today. Check the Ministry of Transportation and Telecommunications for updates before you rely on any new service.
Do I need an international driving permit?
It depends on your nationality and the rental company. Ask the company before you book, and check with the Ministry of Interior. Carry your home licence and passport whenever you drive.
