Best Time to Visit Albania: A Month-by-Month Guide

The best time to visit Albania is late spring (May to June) and early autumn (September to early October). The weather is warm, the sea is swimmable, most hiking trails are open, and you miss the busiest weeks of high summer.
The longer answer depends on what you want to do, because Albania packs very different climates into a small space.

Best Time to Visit Albania at a Glance

Beaches and the Riviera: June and September
Hiking in the Albanian Alps: late June to September
Cities, castles and ruins: April to June, and September to October
Skiing: January to mid-March
Fewest crowds and lowest prices: November, though many places are closed

Why Timing Matters So Much Here

Albania has three main climate zones: a warm Mediterranean coast, an interior with sharper extremes, and cooler mountains in the north-east. So the weather in Tirana, on the Riviera and in the Alps can feel like three different countries on the same day.
Along the coast, summers are hot and dry and winters are mild and damp. Rain tends to start from October. Inland and in the mountains, evenings stay cool even in summer, and snow is normal in winter.

Spring (March to May)

Spring is one of the best times to see Albania. Temperatures run roughly from 12°C to 25°C, the countryside turns green, and rainfall drops as the weeks go by.
March is still quiet, and the Riviera is cool and damp. By April and May, things wake up. May is a favorite for beach trips because the weather is warm and the summer resorts are open. The sea in the south reaches a swimmable temperature toward the end of the month, though it’s still fresh.
Spring is also great for archaeological sites like Apollonia, and for exploring towns without summer heat.
One warning for hikers: snowmelt makes the Albanian Alps tricky in March. Most guides suggest waiting until late spring for the mountains, and the high passes can stay blocked by snow until late May.

Summer (June to August)

Summer is when the coast earns its reputation. Temperatures there average between 25°C and 35°C, and July and August are the hottest months. Inland cities can feel even hotter, so plan sightseeing for early morning or late afternoon.
The upside is a lively Riviera and long, dry days. The downside is that this is peak season. Albania never gets the crowds of some neighboring countries, but beach towns fill up, and you should book rooms well ahead for July and August.
June is the sweet spot of summer. It’s hot enough for swimming and quieter than the peak weeks. Mountain villages also come alive in June, and the Alps are a cool escape when the coast gets too warm.

Autumn (September to November)

September is, for many travelers, the best month overall. Days are still warm, the sea holds its summer heat, and the crowds thin out. If beaches are your priority, go early in the month, because some resorts start closing as temperatures fall.
September and October also suit active trips. You can hike, cycle, explore ruins and swim, sometimes in the same week. Sights like the Blue Eye spring near Saranda are easier to enjoy without the long summer queues.
By the end of October, many seaside businesses shut for the winter. November is the rainiest month and usually the cheapest time to travel, but outside the cities and a few mountain areas, many tourism businesses are closed. It only makes sense if you want a quiet city break.

Winter (December to February)

Winter on the coast is mild, with temperatures averaging roughly 5°C to 15°C, but it’s wet. Many Riviera restaurants and hotels are closed. Mountain areas get heavy rain and snow, and landslides can slow travel.
So why go? Skiing, mostly. The season runs from about January to mid-March, and the area around Korçë in the south-east is the usual base, with Dardhë-Bigëll and Voskopojë nearby. The facilities are less developed than at many other European ski areas, so set your expectations accordingly.
Tirana also works as a winter city break, with plenty of indoor places to eat, drink and visit.

Best Time for Your Kind of Trip

Beach holiday on the Riviera
Aim for mid-June or the first weeks of September. You get warm water, open restaurants and calmer beaches than in July and August. Places like Dhërmi, Himarë and Ksamil are all easier to enjoy outside the peak weeks.
Hiking in the Albanian Alps
The classic route is the Valbona to Theth hike, roughly 15 to 20 km depending on the route, over a pass of about 1,800 m, and it takes roughly 6 to 8 hours. The trail season is often given as May to October, but June to September is the safer window. The pass can still be blocked in May and October, depending on the year.
Even in season, mountain weather changes fast, and rain or hail is possible. Bring warm layers, and carry cash, because there are no ATMs in Theth or Valbona.
Many hikers reach Valbona by the Komani Lake ferry, a boat ride of about two hours through a limestone canyon, followed by a short transfer.

Culture and history

Butrint, Berat and Gjirokastër are all UNESCO World Heritage sites, and they’re all in the south. Spring and autumn are comfortable for walking steep cobbled streets and castle hills. In summer, do them in the morning and save the afternoon for the sea.

Skiing and snow

Plan for January to mid-March, and check conditions before you book, since Albania’s ski scene is small.

A Smart Combination: Two Windows, One Trip

Here’s something that helps with planning. Mountain trails are most reliable from late June, and the sea is warm from June. That overlap means late June or September lets you hike in the Alps and swim on the Riviera in one trip.

Festivals and Events That Might Change Your Dates

Summer Day (14 March): a public holiday that marks the start of spring.
Gjirokastër National Folklore Festival: held about every five years in the stone city of Gjirokastër. The 2023 edition ran from 24 June to 1 July. Check the Ministry of Culture for the next dates.
Religious holidays: Eid al-Fitr and Eid al-Adha move each year, and both Catholic and Orthodox Easter are public holidays, so some shops and offices close for a day or more.
National holidays (November): expect parades and street concerts around the national days.

Before You Book

Entry rules depend on your passport. Many nationalities can enter Albania without a visa, but the allowed length of stay varies, and some rules have been changing. Check the official Albanian government or your own foreign ministry site before you travel.
Book accommodation early for July and August, and for the Alps in peak hiking weeks.

So, When Should You Go?

For most people, the answer is June or September. Choose June if you want long days and a lively atmosphere, and September if you prefer warm water with fewer people. Pick spring for cities and ruins, late June to September for the mountains, and winter only if you want to ski or enjoy a quiet capital.
In Albania, the right season for the Riviera isn’t always the right one for the Alps.
