Safety notice. The US Department of State rates Afghanistan at Level 4, Do Not Travel, and says not to travel for any reason. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office advises against all travel, even with an organised tour group. Both warn of terrorism, kidnapping, wrongful detention and almost no consular help. The warnings cover the whole country, including Kabul, Bamiyan, Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif and Kandahar. This Afghanistan travel guide is for information only.
Most international flights to Afghanistan land at Kabul International Airport (KBL), and the main links run through Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Istanbul and Islamabad. Schedules change often, and some routes are suspended and restored without much notice. Confirm every flight with the airline before you buy.

Which airport do you fly into for Afghanistan?
Kabul International Airport, with the code KBL, is the main international gateway and the arrival point named for the tourist e-Visa. It sits about 5 kilometres north-east of the city centre. Other airports, including Herat, mostly handle domestic and regional services, which the getting around Afghanistan guide covers.
The Afghan authorities renamed the airport after the 2021 change of government, so older tickets and maps may still say Hamid Karzai International. The IATA code on your ticket stays KBL either way. For the entry document, see the Afghanistan visa guide.
How do you get from the airport into the city?
Arrange the transfer before you land. A driver sent by your hotel, host or registered operator is the usual option, and the ride into central Kabul is short. Do not accept offers from strangers in the arrivals area, and keep your printed visa and accommodation details to hand for checks on the way.
At Herat, Mazar-i-Sharif and Kandahar the airports lie close to their cities, and the same rule applies: use a pre-arranged driver. The where to stay in Afghanistan guide explains how lodging can help with this.
Which airlines fly to Afghanistan?
Services reported in 2026 include Afghan carriers Kam Air and Ariana Afghan Airlines, plus flydubai, Air Arabia, Etihad Airways, Turkish Airlines, Pakistan International Airlines and Iranian carriers such as Mahan Air. Turkish Airlines resumed Istanbul service in 2024, and Etihad restarted Abu Dhabi to Kabul in March 2026 and has added frequency since. Which airlines operate in a given week varies, so check the airline page rather than a booking site alone.
| Route | Typical flight time | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Dubai to Kabul | About 3 hours | The busiest route, with several airlines |
| Islamabad to Kabul | About 1 hour 35 minutes | Shortest route, subject to border tension |
| Istanbul to Kabul | Longest nonstop route | Turkish Airlines, several flights a week |
| Abu Dhabi to Kabul | Check the airline | Etihad, frequency has increased in 2026 |
Is flying into Kabul safe?
The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office has said Kabul International Airport does not meet international aviation safety standards, and its safety and security page warns of attacks on aviation and airports. US operators also face Federal Aviation Administration restrictions in the region. Insurance may not apply, so confirm cover in writing.
What time zone does Afghanistan use?
Afghanistan uses Afghanistan Time, UTC+4:30, with no daylight saving. The half-hour offset catches people out when reading arrival times. Dubai is 30 minutes behind Kabul, and Islamabad is 1 hour 30 minutes behind.

Quick answers
Can I fly directly to Kabul from Europe or North America?
Nonstop flights from those regions are not confirmed. Most trips connect through a regional hub such as Dubai, Abu Dhabi or Istanbul. Check the airline for the current route before buying a ticket.
Which airline flies from Istanbul to Kabul?
Turkish Airlines resumed its Istanbul to Kabul service in 2024 and runs several flights a week. Frequency has varied between four and five weekly, so confirm the days on the airline’s own site.
How early should I book a flight to Afghanistan?
Book after the visa is approved, and choose a changeable fare. Timetables move with little warning, so a flexible ticket matters more than an early one.
