How to Choose Where to Stay
In Turkey, the area you choose matters more than the star rating. In Istanbul especially, a hotel near the sights can save hours of travel, while a quieter neighborhood can be cheaper and calmer. Below are the main bases.
Istanbul
- Sultanahmet: next to Hagia Sophia, the Blue Mosque and Topkapı Palace. Best for first visits and short stays, though evenings are quiet and restaurants are touristy. Expect to hear the call to prayer early in the morning.
- Karaköy and Galata: stylish cafes, galleries and the Bosphorus ferries. Walkable to the old town across the Galata Bridge.
- Beyoğlu and Taksim: busy, with shops, nightlife and metro access. Noisy at night, so ask for a quiet room.
- Kadıköy (Asian side): a local feel, great food markets and a short ferry ride to the old town.
- Beşiktaş and Ortaköy: Bosphorus views and palaces, with larger hotels.
- Şişli and Nişantaşı: upscale shopping streets and business hotels, calmer at night and linked to the metro. Good if you prefer a polished, residential feel.
Istanbul is hilly and traffic is heavy, so choose a hotel near a tram, metro or ferry stop if you can. If you land on a very early or late flight, a hotel near Istanbul Airport or Sabiha Gökçen can save a stressful transfer, but the city itself is far from both airports.
Cappadocia
Göreme is the classic base, with cave hotels, restaurants and balloon-launch views. Uçhisar is quieter and has castle views. Ürgüp is more local and has a larger choice of hotels. Cave rooms can be cold in winter and dark, so check the heating and light before you book.
- Cave hotels often have steps and narrow passages, which can be hard with luggage or reduced mobility. Ask before you book.
- Many hotels have terraces for watching balloons at sunrise, which saves you an early drive.
- Some hotels offer balloon booking, but compare it with the price from a licensed operator before you agree.
Antalya and the Coast
- Kaleiçi (Antalya old town): atmospheric stone streets and small hotels near the harbour.
- Lara and Belek: large all-inclusive resorts for family beach holidays.
- Kaş and Kalkan: boutique hotels with sea views and a relaxed pace.
- Fethiye and Ölüdeniz: a mix of budget stays and beach hotels.
- Bodrum and the Aegean coast: beach resorts and stylish boutique stays, busy in summer.
Ephesus and Pamukkale
Most visitors stay one night near each. In Selçuk, small family-run hotels are within a short distance of Ephesus. At Pamukkale, stay in the village near the terraces for early or late visits, when the crowds are thinner. Many hotels in both places offer a thermal pool or a home-cooked dinner, which makes a good end to a day of walking.
Halal-Friendly and Family Stays
Most hotels in Turkey serve a large breakfast that includes halal options, and Turkey is a Muslim-majority country, so halal food is easy to find. Larger resorts often have separate pools or family areas, and some coastal hotels advertise halal or conservative-friendly services. If it matters to you, check the hotel’s own page or ask before you book. Family rooms and connecting rooms are common in resorts but sell out early in the school holidays.
Prices and Booking Tips
- Hotel prices have risen in recent years. Compare several sites, and check whether breakfast is included. Turkish breakfast is a highlight.
- Book early for spring and autumn in Istanbul, for cave hotels in Cappadocia, and for coastal hotels from July to August.
- Read recent reviews about noise, cleanliness and hot water. Look for rooms with air conditioning on the coast.
- Check the cancellation rules, and confirm whether the price includes taxes. Turkey charges an accommodation tax on hotel stays, usually 2 percent of the room price, which has been temporarily reduced to 1 percent until the end of 2026. Some online rates include it and some do not, so ask at check-in whether it is already paid.
- All-inclusive resorts are good for families on the coast, but you will see less of the country.
- Ask about luggage storage if you arrive before check-in or leave late.
- Around Eid and national holidays, many Turkish families travel, so coastal hotels fill early.
