Flights to Thailand: Airports, Booking Tips and Domestic Flights

Thailand's main airports, how to find cheaper flights, tips for multi-city trips and what to do before you fly.

Main Airports in Thailand

  • Bangkok Suvarnabhumi (BKK): the main international airport and the best choice for most long-haul flights.
  • Bangkok Don Mueang (DMK): mainly used by low-cost airlines and many domestic routes. Check which airport your ticket uses, because the two are far apart.
  • Phuket (HKT), Chiang Mai (CNX), Krabi (KBV) and Koh Samui (USM): busy regional airports. Some receive international flights, and all are well connected to Bangkok.

Most visitors arrive in Bangkok, but flying straight to Phuket, Krabi or Chiang Mai can save a transfer if there is a good option from your city.

When to Book Flights to Thailand

Book early for the cool season (November to February), especially around Christmas and New Year, when prices peak. For travel between May and October, prices are usually lower and you can often book closer to the date. A common approach is to start tracking prices a few months in advance and book when you see a fare you are happy with.

How to Find Cheaper Flights

  • Be flexible with dates: moving a trip by a few days can cut the price noticeably.
  • Compare the full cost: a cheap fare with no checked bag or meals can end up more expensive than a full-service ticket.
  • Check nearby airports and routes: flights with one connection are often cheaper than direct ones, but allow enough time for the connection.
  • Compare several sites: use a fare comparison site and the airline’s own website, and check the baggage rules before you pay.
  • Avoid very tight connections: a missed connection on separate tickets is your risk, not the airline’s.

Open-Jaw and Multi-City Trips

If you plan to travel through Thailand rather than return to your starting point, an open-jaw ticket can save time. For example, fly into Bangkok and home from Phuket or Chiang Mai. This saves a domestic flight back and can fit neatly into our Thailand itineraries.

Domestic Flights Inside Thailand

Flying within Thailand is quick and often affordable. Bangkok to Chiang Mai takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, and Bangkok to Phuket or Krabi is about 1 hour 20 minutes. Several full-service and low-cost airlines fly these routes. Low-cost fares usually include only a small cabin bag, so add checked baggage when you book. Booking early usually gives the best price. If you are connecting to an international flight, allow plenty of time and book through to your final destination when possible.

Before You Fly

  • Complete the arrival card: fill in the Thailand Digital Arrival Card within 72 hours before landing. See our Thailand visa guide.
  • Check your passport: it should be valid for the whole stay, and many airlines expect six months of validity.
  • Carry proof of onward travel: airlines may ask to see a return or onward ticket before you board.
  • Get travel insurance: especially if you will ride scooters or do water sports.
  • Arrange a local eSIM: a travel eSIM is usually cheaper than roaming and works as soon as you land.

Arriving in Bangkok

From Suvarnabhumi, the Airport Rail Link runs into the city, and metered taxis and ride-hailing apps are also available. Use the official taxi queue and insist on the meter. Allow extra time in the late afternoon, when Bangkok traffic is at its worst. From Don Mueang, buses, trains and taxis connect to the center.
