How to Choose Where to Stay in India

India has every kind of accommodation, from simple guesthouses and homestays to converted palaces and luxury resorts. In busy cities, the neighborhood matters more than the number of stars, because traffic is slow and a hotel in the wrong area can add an hour to every trip. Below are the main bases and what each one is good for.

Delhi

  • Connaught Place and Central Delhi: a convenient base with metro links, restaurants and many mid-range hotels. It is busy and a bit noisy.
  • South Delhi (Hauz Khas, Greater Kailash, Defence Colony): quieter, greener and good for cafes, boutique hotels and restaurants.
  • Aerocity: a cluster of international hotels next to the airport. Very useful for late arrivals and early flights, but far from the sights.
  • Paharganj and Old Delhi: budget guesthouses near New Delhi railway station. Cheap and lively, but crowded and basic.

Agra and Jaipur

  • Agra: choose a hotel near the Taj Mahal or the Taj East Gate area if you want a sunrise visit, and check whether it has Taj views from the rooftop or restaurant. Many travelers stay only one night.
  • Jaipur: the city center and the old Pink City put you near the main sights. Quieter neighborhoods such as C-Scheme and Civil Lines have good mid-range and boutique hotels, and there are heritage havelis (old mansions) converted into hotels.

Rajasthan: Udaipur, Jodhpur and Jaisalmer

This is the best region for heritage hotels. In Udaipur, stay near Lake Pichola for views of the City Palace. In Jodhpur, stay in or near the blue old city for views of the fort. In Jaisalmer, a stay inside or near the fort is atmospheric, and desert camps outside the city offer a night under the stars. Book these early in the cooler months.

Mumbai

  • Colaba and Fort: close to the Gateway of India and colonial landmarks. Good for first visits.
  • Bandra and Juhu: more modern, with cafes, nightlife and beach areas, but further from the old city.
  • Near the airport: only for short stopovers, because traffic can be heavy.

Goa

  • North Goa (Calangute, Candolim, Anjuna, Vagator): lively beaches, shacks, markets and nightlife.
  • South Goa (Palolem, Agonda, Benaulim): quieter, with long beaches and a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Panjim and old Goa: good for churches and Portuguese-era streets.

Many beach shacks and some hotels close during the monsoon, from about June to September, so check before you book.

Kerala

  • Fort Kochi: old buildings, boutique guesthouses and cafes, with easy walking.
  • Alleppey and Kumarakom: houseboats and lakeside resorts on the backwaters. A houseboat overnight is the signature experience, but compare operators carefully for safety and cleanliness.
  • Munnar: tea plantations and cool air. Choose a hotel with a view and check how long the road transfer takes.

Types of Accommodation

  • Hostels and budget guesthouses: about 800 to 2,500 Indian rupees a night for a basic room, rough guide.
  • Mid-range hotels: about 3,000 to 8,000 rupees, usually with air conditioning, breakfast and private bathroom.
  • Heritage and boutique hotels: about 8,000 to 25,000 rupees, in palaces, havelis and restored buildings.
  • Luxury hotels and resorts: 15,000 to 50,000 rupees or more, especially in major cities and at palace hotels.
  • Homestays and houseboats: a good way to meet local families and enjoy home cooking. Look for recent reviews.

These ranges are rough and change with the season, location and day of the week, so always check the final price before booking.

Booking Tips

  • Book early for November to February, around Diwali and over Christmas and New Year, when prices are highest.
  • Check recent reviews for noise, cleanliness, hot water and air conditioning. In hot months, a working air conditioner matters a great deal.
  • Confirm whether breakfast and taxes are included. Room taxes in India can add a noticeable amount to the final price.
  • Check how far the hotel is from the station or airport, and whether it offers pick-up.
  • Choose free cancellation where you can, especially before your visa has been approved.
  • Carry your passport and visa, because hotels in India usually need to record foreign guests’ details.

Comfort and Safety Tips

  • Ask for a quiet room. Many Indian cities are noisy, so request a room away from the road and check reviews for mentions of noise.
  • Check the basics. Look for reliable hot water, working air conditioning and a safe for your valuables before you commit to a longer stay.
  • Be careful with agents. Taxi drivers and touts at stations may claim your hotel is closed or full and take you to a place that pays them a commission. Confirm your booking with the hotel directly.
  • Solo and women travelers: choose well-reviewed hotels in central areas, share your plans with the front desk and arrange transport for late arrivals in advance.
  • Food needs: if you need halal or vegetarian food, ask the hotel and check nearby restaurants.
  • Be ready for power cuts. Keep a charged power bank, and ask whether the hotel has a backup generator.

Heritage Hotels and Houseboats

Heritage hotels in old palaces and havelis are a highlight, but rooms can vary a lot in size and style, so check photos of the exact room type you are booking. Some older buildings have steps and no lift.

For a Kerala houseboat, confirm whether air conditioning is included and for how many hours it runs, how many bedrooms and bathrooms there are, which meals are provided, and whether the boat is licensed. Choose a well-reviewed operator, because standards differ widely.
