The Short Answer

Spring (May and June) and early autumn (September) are the sweet spot for most trips, with mild weather and fewer crowds than summer. The best month depends on what you want to do, so use this guide to match the season to your plans.

France Month by Month

  • January and February: cold and often grey in the north, with the lowest hotel prices in Paris. This is peak ski season in the Alps.
  • March: early spring, still cool. Museums are quiet and prices are modest.
  • April: gardens begin to bloom and days lengthen. Easter weekends can be busy.
  • May: pleasant weather, long days and flowers everywhere. May has several public holidays, and the Cannes Film Festival fills the Riviera.
  • June: warm and sunny. Lavender begins to bloom in Provence from late June, and FΓͺte de la Musique on 21 June fills the streets with music.
  • July: hot and crowded. Bastille Day on 14 July is celebrated across the country, and French school holidays push up prices.
  • August: the busiest month, with high prices on the coast. Some small family-run shops and restaurants close for the holidays, especially in cities.
  • September: warm seas on the Mediterranean, the grape harvest in wine regions and fewer tourists.
  • October: autumn colours and cooler days. Good value in Paris and the Loire.
  • November: grey and quiet, with cheaper hotels. Christmas markets begin late in the month.
  • December: Christmas markets in Strasbourg and Colmar, festive lights in Paris, and the start of the ski season.

Best Month for Your Trip

  • Sightseeing in Paris: April to June, or September and October.
  • Beaches on the Riviera: June and September, when it is warm but less crowded than July and August.
  • Lavender in Provence: late June to July.
  • Wine regions: September and October, for the harvest.
  • Skiing: January to March in the Alps.
  • Christmas markets: late November and December, especially in Alsace.
  • Lowest prices: November to March, except around the holidays and ski weeks.

Regional Notes

  • North and Paris: mild summers, cool and grey winters, and rain at any time of year.
  • South and Riviera: hot, dry summers and mild winters.
  • Alps and Pyrenees: snow from about December to March, with hiking best from June to September.
  • Atlantic coast: milder and wetter than the Mediterranean.

Tips for Picking Your Dates

  • Book trains, major sights and hotels early for July, August and any holiday week.
  • Check the strike calendar before you travel, especially for rail and air.
  • If you are flexible, shoulder months give you the best balance of weather, prices and crowds.
