Whether you need a Dubai visa depends on your passport. Many nationalities receive a visa on arrival or enter without one, while others must arrange a visa before they fly. Rules change, and the answer is different for each passport, so confirm your own case on an official source before you book. The wider context is in the Dubai travel guide.

Short answer: Citizens of the Gulf Cooperation Council states do not need a tourist visa. Citizens of many countries, including EU member states, the United Kingdom, the United States, Canada, Australia and Japan, receive a visa on arrival, and other nationalities may get a shorter stay on arrival or must apply before travel. Check your passport on the official ICP site.

Which Travellers Need a Visa Before Arrival?

  • On-arrival or visa-free passports: the length of stay depends on nationality. The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security publishes the list on its official site.
  • Passports that need a prearranged visa: apply through an airline such as Emirates, flydubai or Etihad, a licensed travel agent, or the Dubai General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs at GDRFA Dubai.
  • June 2026 change: nationals of Indonesia, Vietnam, Thailand, the Philippines, Kenya and South Africa who hold residence permits from the United States, an EU country, the United Kingdom, Singapore, Japan, South Korea, Australia, New Zealand or Canada can get a 14-day or 60-day visa on arrival, according to the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

How to Apply for a Tourist Visa

Check eligibility first, then choose one route. An airline booking is often the simplest route if you fly with that carrier. An agent adds a fee but can handle documents. Official portals take applications directly. Prepare a passport scan, a recent photo and your flight and hotel details.

Fees and processing times vary by visa type and provider, so we do not list numbers here. Read the fee and the time on the official page or the airline’s page before you pay.

Passport Rules and Documents

  • Passports normally need at least six months of validity on arrival.
  • The UAE does not accept passports with the X gender marker, according to the US State Department.
  • Officers may ask for a return or onward ticket and your hotel details.
  • Carry prescription medicines in their original packaging with a doctor’s note. Some common medicines are controlled in the UAE, so check the rules before you travel.

What Happens at the Border?

Expect passport control, a photo and sometimes fingerprints or an eye scan. Keep your booking confirmations on your phone. Allow extra time for your connection if you are transferring through Dubai International, as detailed in the flights to Dubai guide.

Overstay and Extensions

A tourist stay ends on the date on your visa or entry stamp. Overstaying leads to daily fines and may affect future entry. Some visas can be extended through ICP or GDRFA, but you should apply before the stay ends.

Safety Notes

Advisory status: The US State Department rates the United Arab Emirates at Level 3, Reconsider Travel, citing the threat of armed conflict and terrorism; the advisory text we could read is dated 3 March 2026. The UK Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office withdrew its advice against all but essential travel in June 2026. Neither government lists the country as Do Not Travel, but both pages can change at short notice, so read them again before you book and before you fly. See the US State Department advisory and the UK FCDO travel advice.

The UAE has strict rules on social behaviour, drug possession, traffic offences and financial crimes. Breaking them can lead to arrest or an exit ban. Buy travel insurance that covers medical care and evacuation, and read the exclusions for conflict-related claims.

Common Mistakes

  • Using an unofficial website that charges extra fees for a standard visa.
  • Travelling on a passport with less than six months of validity.
  • Assuming that a layover never needs a visa.
  • Carrying medicines without prescriptions.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can I leave the airport during a long layover?

Some travellers may qualify for a short transit visa arranged through the airline, and eligible passports can use the visa on arrival. Ask your airline before booking, because rules depend on nationality and ticket type.

Does a Dubai visa cover the whole UAE?

A UAE visa allows travel in the country, and there are no border checks between emirates. Read the conditions on your own visa, because validity and entry limits differ.

Which websites are official?

Official sources are the ICP, GDRFA Dubai, the UAE government portal, your airline and licensed agents. Many look-alike sites charge extra for the same service, so check the web address.

What if my passport expires soon?

Renew it before you book. Airlines may refuse boarding if the validity is below the required period, and border officers can refuse entry.
